Ayrton Senna produced one of Formula 1’s great wet-weather performances at the 1993 European Grand Prix. A breathtaking first lap put him in front at Donington Park, and sharp decisions in changing conditions carried him to victory over Damon Hill and Alain Prost.

Championship background
Ayrton Senna arrived at round 3 leading the 1993 F1 World Championship on 16 points, with Alain Prost on 10. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 16 points.
Race entries
Thierry Boutsen replaced Ivan Capelli at Jordan, joining Rubens Barrichello. Benetton introduced the B193B, while Footwork brought its new FA14. Donington Park hosted its first World Championship Grand Prix, with the European title returning to the calendar after an absence stretching back to 1985.
Thursday familiarisation
An additional Thursday session gave the drivers an opportunity to learn Donington Park before the competitive running. The circuit was new to the World Championship, and the extra track time helped teams establish their settings ahead of an unsettled weekend.
Friday Free Practice
Rain made Friday practice a difficult introduction to the weekend, with Ayrton Senna immediately finding speed in the McLaren. De Andrea de Cesaris crashed heavily, leaving Tyrrell with repair work and disrupting his preparation. Benetton was also learning its new car in conditions that offered little chance for straightforward comparisons with the previous model.

Friday Qualifying
Ayrton Senna was fastest in Friday’s wet qualifying, narrowly ahead of Damon Hill, with Alain Prost third. Lehto impressed in fourth for Sauber. Those times would matter little if Saturday stayed dry, but they offered an early indication of Ayrton Senna‘s comfort in the conditions that ultimately shaped the race.

Saturday Free Practice
Dry weather on Saturday brought a dramatic reduction in lap times and put Alain Prost back on top. Karl Wendlinger lost useful running to brake trouble, then borrowed Lehto’s settings for qualifying. McLaren‘s dry-track balance proved less convincing than its wet performance, setting up a very different contest from the one seen on Friday.

Saturday Qualifying
Alain Prost took pole on the dry track on Saturday, beating Damon Hill by 0.304 seconds. Michael Schumacher edged Ayrton Senna for third, while Karl Wendlinger and Michael Andretti completed the first three rows. Luca Badoer failed to qualify the Lola. The grid was settled by dry-weather speed, although Sunday’s forecast promised another reset.

Sunday warm-up
Rain returned for the warm-up and Damon Hill set the fastest time. The session gave drivers another chance to work on wet-weather balance after Saturday’s dry running. Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Michael Schumacher concentrated on their settings, with the unstable weather leaving the teams to weigh outright speed against the grip and confidence needed on a soaked circuit.

What happened in the 1993 European Grand Prix?
Ayrton Senna slipped to fifth at the start but attacked immediately. He passed Michael Schumacher, swept around Karl Wendlinger through the Craner Curves, caught Damon Hill and overtook Alain Prost at the Melbourne Hairpin, ending the opening lap in the lead. Michael Andretti and Karl Wendlinger collided behind him, while Rubens Barrichello charged from 12th to fourth.
Repeated showers and drying spells produced a succession of tyre changes. Ayrton Senna judged the conditions more effectively than Williams, recovering even after a slow stop. Alain Prost made seven stops and lost time with a stall, while Damon Hill eventually secured second. Ayrton Senna‘s fastest lap came on a passage through the pit lane without stopping, which shortened his route past the final hairpin.
Ayrton Senna won by over a minute from Damon Hill, with Alain Prost third. Johnny Herbert‘s restrained approach to tyre changes earned fourth, ahead of Riccardo Patrese and Fabrizio Barbazza. Rubens Barrichello‘s outstanding drive ended with a fuel-pressure problem late on, costing Jordan a valuable finish after running as high as second.
After the race, Ayrton Senna headed the drivers’ standings with 26 points, followed by Alain Prost on 14. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 26, with Williams on 26.
