The 2015 FIA Formula One World Championship featured 19 Grand Prix. The campaign began with the Australian Grand Prix on 15 March and concluded with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 29 November.
Season
Entering the season, Lewis Hamilton was the defending World Drivers’ Champion after securing his second title at the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. His team, Mercedes, also began the year as the defending Constructors’ Champion, having claimed its first title of the hybrid era at the 2014 Russian Grand Prix. Mercedes quickly reaffirmed its status as the dominant team in Formula One, continuing the strong form it had shown in the previous season.
The championship calendar featured two notable changes compared to 2014. The most significant was the return of the Mexican Grand Prix, which rejoined the Formula One schedule for the first time since 1992. Meanwhile, the German Grand Prix was removed from the calendar after organisers were unable to reach an agreement on a venue to host the race. Its absence meant that Germany did not host a Formula One World Championship race for the first time in fifty-five years.
On the track, the championship battle was once again led by the Mercedes drivers. Lewis Hamilton secured his third World Drivers’ Championship with three races remaining in the season, confirming the title at the United States Grand Prix. Hamilton finished the year comfortably ahead of his teammate Nico Rosberg, who placed second in the standings 59 points behind, while Sebastian Vettel finished third in his first season driving for Ferrari, a further 44 points adrift.
In the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes clinched the title at the Russian Grand Prix, ahead of Ferrari and Williams. Mercedes completed the season with a then-record 703 points, underlining the team’s continued dominance during the early years of Formula One’s hybrid power unit era.
Hamilton’s success extended beyond the championship standings. He also secured the FIA Pole Trophy, awarded to the driver with the most pole positions during the season, finishing the year with eleven poles. Hamilton additionally claimed the DHL Fastest Lap Award, while Ferrari won the inaugural DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award, recognising the team’s efficiency in pit lane during races.
The 2015 season also introduced a driver who would become a major figure in Formula One in later years. Max Verstappen made his debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso, becoming one of the youngest drivers to compete in the sport and beginning a career that would later see him become a multiple-time World Champion.
