Championship background

Graham Hill arrived at round 4 leading the 1962 F1 World Championship on 16 points, with Phil Hill on 14. BRM headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 16 points.

Race entries

Ferrari was absent because industrial action prevented preparation. Porsche returned with extensively revised flat-eight cars. Lotus introduced another Type 25, allowing Taylor to use the earlier monocoque, and Siffert acquired the BRM-powered Lotus. Cooper fielded V8 cars for both drivers.

Thursday timed practice

Surtees and Clark were quick immediately, but steering-rack problems affected both Clark’s new Lotus and Ireland’s car. Gurney demonstrated Porsche’s progress before Hill set the fastest time late in the session. Siffert stopped with clutch-control trouble, while several teams worked on gearing and carburation.

Friday final qualifying

Clark arrived late but took pole after gearbox adjustments. Hill and McLaren also improved. Salvadori’s engine failed, Ginther needed a throttle cable replaced and Brabham ran off into the grass. Taylor completed only a brief run in Clark’s car, while Maggs missed the session. The programme ended with the whole of Saturday available for repairs.

Qualifying Classification

The grid was based on Thursday and Friday morning practice. There was no Saturday Formula One qualifying session.

Pre-race preparations

Drivers were allowed reconnaissance laps before the start. Clark’s engine then refused to run cleanly after a plug change, and the team traced crossed plug leads in time for him to join the grid.

What happened in the 1962 French Grand Prix?

Hill led the early contest ahead of a group including Clark, Surtees and McLaren. Brabham retired with suspension trouble, McLaren lost time with gearbox problems and Surtees required repairs.

Hill briefly lost the lead after contact while lapping Lewis, then recovered it before Clark’s suspension failed. Hill subsequently stopped with fuel-injection and throttle trouble, handing control to Gurney.

Gurney brought the Porsche home for victory, with Maggs second and Ginther third despite a late throttle-cable problem. McLaren, Surtees and de Beaufort completed the points. A post-finish collision damaged the cars of Taylor and Trintignant, but neither driver was injured.

After the race, Graham Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 16 points, followed by Phil Hill on 14. BRM led the constructors’ table on 20, with Cooper – Climax on 17.
