Championship background

The Tuscan Grand Prix brought the championship to the fast, flowing Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello for the first time. Ferrari celebrated its milestone with a special burgundy livery, and a limited number of spectators returned after the season’s closed-door opening races. Hamilton led Bottas by 47 points, with Monza winner Pierre Gasly arriving fresh from his breakthrough success.

Race entries

All ten teams used their regular race drivers, with no practice substitutes. The unfamiliar venue meant a full programme of learning for the entire field before qualifying and the race.

Free Practice

Valtteri Bottas led FP1 with a 1:17.879, just 0.048s ahead of Max Verstappen. Charles Leclerc was third as drivers learned Mugello‘s demanding sequence of fast corners.

Bottas remained quickest in FP2 on a 1:16.989, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen. Sergio Perez received a one-place grid penalty after a collision with Kimi Räikkönen during the session.

Bottas completed a practice sweep with a 1:16.530 in FP3. Verstappen was only 0.017s behind and Hamilton another 0.066s back, setting up a close qualifying contest.

Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton denied Valtteri Bottas pole with a 1:15.144, beating his team-mate by 0.059s. Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon secured the second row for Red Bull Racing, while Charles Leclerc qualified fifth for Ferrari.

Late yellow flags after Esteban Ocon spun restricted improvements on the final runs. Sergio Perez‘s practice penalty affected the order behind the leading five, while Monza winner Pierre Gasly suffered an early exit in Q1. Mugello had already produced a very different competitive picture from the previous weekend.

Daniil Kvyat and Kimi Räikkönen set identical times in Q2; Kvyat was classified ahead as he set his lap time before Räikkönen.

What happened in the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix?

Lewis Hamilton survived two stoppages and repeated restarts to take his 90th Grand Prix victory. Valtteri Bottas finished second, while Alexander Albon passed Daniel Ricciardo late on to claim his maiden Formula 1 podium.

Bottas beat Hamilton away from the initial start. Behind them, Verstappen lost power and was caught in a collision involving several cars, with both he and Gasly retiring. A separate incident left Carlos Sainz facing the wrong way and damaged Sebastian Vettel‘s front wing.

The safety-car restart brought a much larger accident. Cars towards the back accelerated before the pack ahead had properly launched, then encountered slowing traffic. Sainz, Kevin Magnussen, Antonio Giovinazzi and Nicholas Latifi were eliminated, and the race was red-flagged. Esteban Ocon also retired during the stoppage with a brake problem.

At the next standing start, Hamilton used Bottas’s slipstream and swept around the outside at Turn 1 to take the lead. Leclerc initially ran third but fell back as the race developed. Ricciardo moved into podium contention, while Lance Stroll and Albon were also firmly in the fight.

A later accident for Stroll brought out another safety car and then the second red flag. The remaining drivers faced one final standing restart, giving Bottas another opportunity to challenge Hamilton and reopening the contest for third.

Hamilton held the lead, while Ricciardo briefly passed Bottas before the Mercedes driver recovered second. Albon then overtook Ricciardo to secure third. Hamilton also took the fastest lap, completing a maximum-points afternoon after a race that required him to win the lead back and defend it repeatedly.

Perez finished fifth, followed by Norris and Kvyat. Leclerc was eighth after a penalty demoted Räikkönen to ninth, while Vettel completed the points. George Russell narrowly missed out in 11th after losing places at the final restart. Hamilton’s lead over Bottas grew to 55 points after Mugello‘s dramatic debut.
