Championship background

Verstappen arrived eight points ahead of Hamilton, with the championship nearing its conclusion. Jeddah was new territory for the whole field: a high-speed street circuit lined by close barriers and offering little margin for error. Mercedes held the constructors’ lead, but both titles remained undecided and every point could influence the outcome in Abu Dhabi.

Race entries

All 20 regular drivers took part, with no substitutes. Alpine ran a special livery treatment to mark its 100th race with Castrol, while the field prepared for a demanding night race on an unfamiliar circuit.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton topped FP1 with a 1:29.786, ahead of Max Verstappen (+0.056s) and Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton led the first session by a narrow margin from Verstappen, with Bottas third as the drivers began building confidence between the barriers.

Lewis Hamilton topped FP2 with a 1:29.018, ahead of Valtteri Bottas (+0.061s) and Pierre Gasly. Hamilton remained fastest in FP2 ahead of Bottas and Gasly. Leclerc’s heavy late crash brought the session to an early conclusion.

Max Verstappen topped FP3 with a 1:28.100, ahead of Lewis Hamilton (+0.214s) and Sergio Perez. Verstappen topped FP3 ahead of Hamilton and Perez, keeping the leading contenders closely matched before qualifying.

Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position with a 1:27.511, ahead of Valtteri Bottas as Mercedes secured the front row. Max Verstappen qualified third after a dramatic final attempt that had been on course to challenge for pole before he hit the wall at the last corner.

Charles Leclerc recovered from his practice crash to qualify fourth, with Sergio Perez fifth and Pierre Gasly sixth. Verstappen’s accident left Red Bull Racing checking the car carefully, but he retained his third-place start for a race in which the opening corners would prove important more than once.

What happened in the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix?

Lewis Hamilton won a turbulent Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, taking fastest lap as well and drawing level with Max Verstappen on 369.5 points. Verstappen finished second despite penalties, while Valtteri Bottas snatched third from Esteban Ocon at the line.

Hamilton initially led Bottas and Verstappen, but Mick Schumacher‘s crash triggered a safety car and then a red flag. Mercedes had already stopped both cars, while Verstappen stayed out and was able to change tyres during the suspension, gaining the lead.

The first standing restart brought further controversy. Hamilton challenged Verstappen, who left the track at the opening chicane and retained the advantage, while Ocon moved ahead of Hamilton. Separate incidents behind eliminated Perez, George Russell and Nikita Mazepin, prompting another red flag.

The restart order was adjusted to put Ocon first, Hamilton second and Verstappen third. Verstappen attacked immediately on medium tyres and took the lead, leaving Hamilton to pass Ocon and resume the chase. Further interruptions for debris repeatedly broke up the contest.

When Hamilton attacked again, Verstappen ran wide and was instructed to give the position back. The attempt to do so ended in contact when Verstappen slowed and Hamilton struck the rear of the Red Bull Racing car. The stewards later imposed a ten-second penalty on Verstappen for causing that collision, in addition to a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

Hamilton eventually took the lead and pulled clear, completing the race despite front-wing damage. Verstappen’s penalties did not change his second place. Bottas passed Ocon at the finish to take the final podium position by just 0.102s, denying Alpine another podium after Alonso’s Qatar result.

Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth, followed by Gasly, Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Antonio Giovinazzi and Lando Norris completed the points. Hamilton’s third consecutive victory had erased the remaining points deficit, although Verstappen retained the championship lead on wins countback.

The season would therefore be decided in Abu Dhabi with the leading drivers tied. Jeddah had added another contentious chapter to their rivalry and left the championship balanced as closely as it could be before the final race.

Includes one bonus point for setting the fastest lap of the race.

Max Verstappen received a five-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. He also received a ten-second time penalty after the race for causing a collision with Lewis Hamilton. His final position was not affected by the penalties.

Yuki Tsunoda finished 13th, but received a five-second time penalty for causing a collision with Sebastian Vettel.
