2021 British Grand Prix Hamilton Winner

Silverstone welcomed a capacity crowd and a new weekend format for the 2021 British Grand Prix, but the race itself produced the defining drama. Lewis Hamilton recovered from a penalty after his opening-lap collision with Max Verstappen to chase down Charles Leclerc and claim an eighth British Grand Prix victory.

Championship background

Verstappen arrived with a 32-point advantage after three consecutive victories, while Mercedes sought a response on Hamilton’s home ground. The weekend also introduced sprint qualifying: Friday’s timed session set the sprint grid, and Saturday’s short race determined the Grand Prix grid while awarding points to the leading three drivers. It added another competitive session to a weekend already carrying substantial championship significance.

Race entries

The regular 20 drivers contested the weekend, with no substitutes. The sprint format reduced the programme to two practice sessions: one before Friday qualifying and another before Saturday’s sprint.

Free Practice

Max Verstappen topped FP1 with a 1:27.035, ahead of Lando Norris (+0.779s) and Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen led the first session comfortably, while Norris narrowly edged Hamilton for second as teams prepared for qualifying on the same afternoon.

Max Verstappen topped FP2 with a 1:29.902, ahead of Charles Leclerc (+0.375s) and Carlos Sainz. Verstappen also topped the second session, ahead of the two Ferraris. The final practice hour gave drivers their last opportunity to assess longer runs before the sprint.

Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton thrilled the home crowd by setting the fastest time in Friday qualifying, his 1:26.134 beating Max Verstappen by 0.075s. Valtteri Bottas qualified third ahead of Charles Leclerc, with Sergio Perez fifth and Lando Norris sixth.

Under the format used in 2021, this session decided the starting order for sprint qualifying rather than awarding Grand Prix pole position. Hamilton had secured the best place from which to begin Saturday’s contest, but the race grid was still to be settled.

Sprint Race

Max Verstappen made the stronger start in Formula 1’s first sprint qualifying event, passing Lewis Hamilton and maintaining the lead over the 17-lap distance. Hamilton finished second and Valtteri Bottas third, earning the leading three drivers three, two and one championship points respectively.

Verstappen’s win also gave him pole position for the Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc remained fourth, while Fernando Alonso made an aggressive start before finishing seventh. Sergio Perez spun and later retired, and George Russell received a three-place Grand Prix grid penalty for contact with Carlos Sainz. Perez subsequently started Sunday’s race from the pit lane after changes to his car.

George Russell received a three-place grid penalty for causing a collision with Carlos Sainz

Sergio Perez was classified as he completed more than 90% of the sprint qualifying distance. He was due to start the race from the back of the grid for exceeding his quota of power unit elements. This made no difference as he was already due to start from last place. He was then required to start the race from the pit lane for a rear wing and suspension setup change in parc fermé.

What happened in the 2021 British Grand Prix?

Lewis Hamilton won a dramatic British Grand Prix after a controversial first-lap collision with Max Verstappen and a late pursuit of Charles Leclerc. The Mercedes driver overcame a ten-second penalty to take victory, while Verstappen’s retirement transformed the championship picture.

The title rivals contested the lead from the start, running closely through the opening sequence before contact at Copse sent Verstappen into the barriers. The race was stopped to allow recovery work and barrier repairs. Verstappen was taken for precautionary medical checks and later released from hospital, while the stewards judged Hamilton predominantly at fault and imposed the penalty.

Leclerc had moved ahead as the leaders collided and retained first place at the restart. Despite intermittent engine trouble, he kept Ferrari in a position to challenge for victory, demonstrating the pace and composure needed to hold off the faster Mercedes.

Hamilton served his penalty at his pit stop and returned behind Lando Norris and Bottas. He passed Norris, who had also lost time in the pits, before Bottas let his team-mate through to begin the chase of Leclerc. The gap narrowed steadily as the race approached its final laps.

On lap 50, Hamilton attacked at Copse and took the lead when Leclerc ran wide. The Ferrari driver had led most of the afternoon but had to settle for second, with Bottas completing the podium. Hamilton’s eighth win at Silverstone drew a jubilant response from the home crowd, although the earlier collision remained central to the post-race debate.

Norris and Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth and fifth for McLaren, followed by Carlos Sainz. Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, Esteban Ocon and Yuki Tsunoda completed the points. Sebastian Vettel retired after an earlier spin, while Pierre Gasly lost a likely points finish to a late puncture.

Perez set the fastest lap but finished outside the top ten, so no bonus point was awarded. Combined with the sprint results, Hamilton’s victory reduced Verstappen’s championship lead to eight points. Silverstone had brought a major shift in momentum and intensified a rivalry that was already shaping the season.
