Russian Grand Prix Sochi

The Russian Grand Prix was added to the Formula 1 World Championship calendar in 2014, held at the purpose-built Sochi Autodrom. Constructed around the Olympic Park that hosted the 2014 Winter Games, the circuit combined long straights with tight 90-degree corners, placing emphasis on traction and braking stability.

Although Russia had hosted Grand Prix events in the early 20th century and had explored plans during the Soviet era, Sochi was the country’s first sustained presence in modern Formula 1. Across its eight championship editions, one team defined the event completely.

What To Know?

  • Mercedes won every race – All eight World Championship Russian Grands Prix from 2014 to 2021 were won by Mercedes, making it one of the most one-sided venue records in Formula 1 history.
  • Hamilton’s 100th victory came at Sochi – Lewis Hamilton reached the landmark of 100 career wins at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix.
  • Bottas scored his first F1 win here – Valtteri Bottas’ breakthrough victory in 2017 came at Sochi after a decisive start from third on the grid.
  • Eight races, three different winners – Despite Mercedes’ dominance, only three drivers won in Russia during its modern run: Hamilton, Rosberg and Bottas.

Russian Grand Prix Winner: 2014 to 2021

From its debut in 2014, the Russian Grand Prix was dominated by Mercedes.

The inaugural race was won by Lewis Hamilton, who converted pole position into victory during a season in which Mercedes controlled the new turbo-hybrid era. Hamilton repeated the feat in 2015, reinforcing the team’s early dominance at Sochi.

In 2016, teammate Nico Rosberg took victory from pole position as part of his championship-winning campaign. A year later, Valtteri Bottas claimed his maiden Formula 1 win at the 2017 Russian Grand Prix. Starting third, Bottas launched brilliantly at the start and held off late pressure from Ferrari to secure a career-defining breakthrough.

Hamilton returned to the top step in 2018 and 2019, both victories playing key roles in his championship campaigns. In 2020, Bottas again triumphed after Hamilton incurred time penalties, ensuring Mercedes maintained its perfect Sochi record.

The final Russian Grand Prix took place in 2021 and delivered a dramatic, rain-affected conclusion. Hamilton started fourth but capitalised on changing conditions late in the race to claim victory. It was the 100th win of his Formula 1 career, a historic milestone achieved at a venue where Mercedes had never been beaten.

Plans had been made to move the race to Igora Drive from 2023, but the 2022 event was cancelled and the contract terminated following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As a result, the Russian Grand Prix’s modern chapter closed with an unbroken streak.
