Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 11 leading the 2001 F1 World Championship on 78 points, with David Coulthard on 47. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 108 points.

Race entries

The regular driver line-ups remained in place, although only 21 cars ultimately qualified to start. Tarso Marques missed the 107% threshold and the stewards rejected Minardi‘s request to admit him under exceptional circumstances.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher led a Ferrari one-two in Friday’s opening session, while both Williams drivers recovered from spins. De la Pedro de la Rosa stopped with a fuel-supply problem before setting a time. The dry but cloudy conditions gave the leading teams a useful baseline before the weather became less cooperative.

Häkkinen headed David Coulthard in the afternoon before rain arrived during the final ten minutes. Jacques Villeneuve spun after a front-suspension failure, damaging his BAR, while Fernando Alonso‘s excursions left his Minardi stranded on wet grass. Heinz-Harald Frentzen overcame an oil leak to finish fifth, keeping Jordan competitive behind the leading teams.

Rain and spray made Saturday’s first practice difficult, and drivers waited before venturing onto the soaked circuit. Michael Schumacher set the fastest lap ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Jacques Villeneuve lost the session to a gearbox problem and Eddie Irvine returned slowly with a hydraulic throttle fault, adding mechanical setbacks to the weather challenge.

Further rain between sessions made the final practice slower still, leaving most drivers unable to improve their earlier times. Tarso Marques spun into the Abbey gravel while warming his tyres and recorded no lap. Kimi Räikkönen avoided a hare on the circuit, while the rest of the field concentrated on staying out of trouble in standing water.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher claimed pole by 0.082 seconds from Häkkinen as the circuit dried. David Coulthard qualified third, followed by Jarno Trulli and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. The session began with a long wait for improved conditions, making the late runs especially important after the lack of dry practice.

Rubens Barrichello qualified sixth, with Kimi Räikkönen seventh and Juan Pablo Montoya eighth. Several drivers damaged suspension components on the kerbs, including Juan Pablo Montoya, who switched to the spare Williams. Tarso Marques fell outside the 107% limit after throttle trouble and did not receive permission to race.

Sunday warm-up

David Coulthard led warm-up ahead of Jarno Trulli and Häkkinen as the track dried for race day. Nick Heidfeld went through the Stowe gravel after losing control over a bump but managed to return to the pits. Otherwise, teams enjoyed a comparatively straightforward final check after the wet Saturday preparations.

What happened in the 2001 British Grand Prix?

Michael Schumacher led away, but David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli collided at the first corner. Jarno Trulli retired immediately, and David Coulthard‘s damaged suspension failed shortly afterwards. Häkkinen stayed close to the leading Ferrari and passed Schumacher into the fast Maggots section on lap five before pulling clear.

Häkkinen’s two-stop strategy worked decisively against Schumacher’s heavier one-stop approach. Juan Pablo Montoya also passed the Ferrari during the opening stint, but the later pit sequence restored Schumacher to second. Häkkinen remained comfortably ahead and secured his first victory of the season.

Rubens Barrichello finished third, with Juan Pablo Montoya fourth and the two Saubers of Kimi Räikkönen and Nick Heidfeld completing the points. Ralf Schumacher retired with a technical failure. David Coulthard‘s non-score allowed Michael Schumacher to increase his championship advantage to 37 points despite missing out on victory.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 84 points, followed by David Coulthard on 47. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 118, with McLaren on 66.
