Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 16 leading the 2001 F1 World Championship on 107 points, with David Coulthard on 57. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 161 points.

Race entries

Tomáš Tomas Enge remained at Prost while Luciano Burti continued his recovery, and Alex Yoong made his second appearance for Minardi. Jean Alesi reached his 200th Grand Prix start. The event also carried a strong commemorative atmosphere following the attacks in the United States.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher led the first practice on a dusty circuit with little grip. Häkkinen lost much of the session while McLaren changed his engine after a pneumatic-system failure. Several drivers slid off without crashing, and the early running helped clean the surface for the sessions to follow.

Häkkinen recovered to set Friday’s quickest lap, ahead of the Ferraris. Giancarlo Fisichella‘s session ended early in the gravel, while Tomas Enge spun and narrowly avoided contact with the two Jaguars before stalling. Jos Verstappen stopped near the pit entrance with an electrical fault in the closing minutes.

Michael Schumacher headed Saturday’s first practice, with Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello following. Ferrari also evaluated rear brake lights during the morning. Juan Pablo Montoya and Jarno Trulli recovered from spins, while Enrique Bernoldi ended up on an escape road after losing control and stalling his Arrows.

An oil-pump failure stopped Michael Schumacher in final practice and required an engine change before qualifying, although his earlier lap remained the fastest overall. Häkkinen improved to second despite a gravel excursion. Alex Yoong spun twice but continued, gaining more experience on his first Indianapolis weekend.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher claimed pole with a 1:11.708. Häkkinen initially set the second-fastest time, ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya, with Rubens Barrichello fifth. Nick Heidfeld matched his season-best qualifying position in sixth, while David Coulthard struggled with oversteer and placed seventh.

Häkkinen subsequently lost his fastest qualifying lap as punishment for the red-light infringement in warm-up. His next-best time put him fourth on the grid, promoting both Williams cars. Tomas Enge also had a difficult session, crashing after a brake failure, but his Prost was repaired for race day.

Mika Häkkinen ‘s fastest qualifying lap time of 1:11.945 was deleted for ignoring a red light during the warm-up session. This demoted him from second to fourth on the grid.

Sunday warm-up

Juan Pablo Montoya‘s engine failure scattered oil and debris onto the circuit, stopping warm-up while the track was cleaned. Ralf Schumacher was fastest, but Häkkinen’s session had lasting consequences: he passed the red light at the pit exit during the stoppage and later damaged the spare McLaren against a barrier.

What happened in the 2001 United States Grand Prix?

Michael Schumacher led away, then allowed the lighter Rubens Barrichello through as Ferrari pursued different fuel strategies. Juan Pablo Montoya later passed Schumacher for the lead, but hydraulic failure ended his challenge after the stops. Ralf Schumacher also retired after spinning into the gravel.

Häkkinen extended his first stint and emerged ahead of Michael Schumacher after his sole stop. Once Rubens Barrichello made his second stop, the McLaren led. Rubens Barrichello closed in before his engine began to fail, eventually retiring near the finish and promoting Schumacher and David Coulthard onto the podium.

Jarno Trulli finished fourth, Eddie Irvine fifth and Nick Heidfeld sixth. Jarno Trulli was initially disqualified over skid-block wear, but Jordan successfully appealed because the original hearing had not followed the required procedure, restoring his result. Häkkinen’s victory was his second of the season and the last of his Grand Prix career.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 113 points, followed by David Coulthard on 61. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 167, with McLaren on 95.
