Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 5 leading the 2000 F1 World Championship on 34 points, with David Coulthard on 14. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 43 points.

Race entries

The regular field remained unchanged. David Coulthard raced after surviving a private-plane accident earlier in the week, carrying injuries that made his eventual performance particularly demanding.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher led Friday’s first practice ahead of Rubens Barrichello as teams waited for a dirty track to improve. Earlier rain and support-race activity had reduced grip, and much of the meaningful running came late. Ferrari‘s opening pace nevertheless suggested a strong response to McLaren‘s Silverstone victory.

Ralf Schumacher moved to second in the afternoon, although Michael’s earlier lap remained the day’s quickest. De la Pedro de la Rosa became stranded in the gravel after losing control under braking. Giancarlo Fisichella also spun twice, illustrating the difficulty of finding a consistent balance as the circuit evolved.

David Coulthard headed Häkkinen in Saturday’s first practice, both improving on new tyres. The Arrows pair briefly featured near the top with identical times, an encouraging showing for the smaller team. The session was comparatively clean, allowing most drivers to complete useful preparation without a major interruption.

Michael Schumacher reclaimed the fastest lap in final practice, with David Coulthard second and Rubens Barrichello third. Häkkinen struggled with grip and an unsettled rear end, while the Jordans followed Ralf Schumacher in the order. Ferrari and McLaren looked closely matched heading into qualifying.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher took his first pole of the season with a 1:20.974, beating Häkkinen by 0.076 seconds. Rubens Barrichello qualified third, while David Coulthard carried extra fuel to work around a fuel-pickup problem and took fourth. Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve completed the first three rows.

De la Pedro de la Rosa initially qualified ninth, but his fuel sample failed to match the approved specification. Arrows withdrew its appeal before the race, and he was sent to the back. Nick Heidfeld also had engine trouble and used the spare Prost, while wind and traffic complicated several drivers’ final attempts.

Pedro de la Rosa had started at the back of the grid for using illegal fuel in qualifying.

Sunday warm-up

Schumacher led warm-up despite a gravel excursion, with Häkkinen and Rubens Barrichello next. De la Pedro de la Rosa‘s engine cut out and sent him off, forcing a switch to the spare Arrows. David Coulthard bounced over a kerb without damage as the teams completed their final race checks.

What happened in the 2000 Spanish Grand Prix?

Michael Schumacher held the lead at the start, with Häkkinen close behind and Ralf Schumacher moving into third. Ferrari‘s first stop went badly wrong when Schumacher was released before the fuel hose had been removed, injuring mechanic Nigel Stepney. Schumacher continued to lead, but the incident forced a change in the refuelling crew.

Another refuelling delay at Schumacher’s second stop allowed Häkkinen ahead. The Ferrari then developed a slow puncture, and David Coulthard passed it before Rubens Barrichello took advantage of the battling Schumacher brothers to move into third. Michael needed an additional tyre stop and dropped to fifth.

Häkkinen won comfortably from David Coulthard, whose second place came despite his injuries. Rubens Barrichello completed the podium, Ralf Schumacher finished fourth and Heinz-Harald Frentzen took the final point after Jenson Button‘s late engine failure. McLaren‘s consecutive one-two finishes tightened the championship contest.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 36 points, followed by Mika Häkkinen on 22. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 49, with McLaren on 42.
