Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 9 leading the 2000 F1 World Championship on 56 points, with David Coulthard on 34. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 84 points.

Race entries

All eleven teams retained their drivers for France. Ferrari arrived with a useful championship lead, but McLaren‘s recent pace meant the contest remained open as the season passed its halfway point.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher headed a quiet first practice in hot conditions, with many drivers limiting their laps. David Coulthard failed to set a time because of a fuel-pump problem, Rubens Barrichello conserved tyres and both Jordans stayed in the garage. Nick Heidfeld‘s third place gave Prost an encouraging early result on home ground.

David Coulthard recovered to lead the afternoon despite losing time to an oil leak that required substantial work on his car. Both BAR drivers became stranded in the gravel as low grip caught them out. Jarno Trulli also stalled during a practice start, interrupting Jordan‘s attempts to make up its earlier lack of running.

David Coulthard again topped Saturday’s first practice, ahead of Häkkinen. The Jordans improved to third and fourth, suggesting a competitive qualifying challenge. With dry conditions throughout, teams had a useful opportunity to refine the balance for Magny-Cours‘ mixture of fast changes of direction and slow corners.

David Coulthard‘s engine developed a problem in final practice, forcing another replacement before qualifying, although his earlier time remained fastest overall. Häkkinen stayed second and Rubens Barrichello improved to third. The McLaren‘s speed was clear, but its repeated mechanical problems complicated the preparation behind that pace.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher took pole with a 1:15.632, just 0.102 seconds ahead of David Coulthard. The McLaren driver briefly used the spare car while another fuel-pump problem was repaired. Rubens Barrichello moved into third late on, ahead of Häkkinen and Ralf Schumacher.

Eddie Irvine qualified sixth, followed by Jacques Villeneuve and the Jordans, while Jenson Button completed the top ten. Grip and changing temperatures complicated setup decisions. After practice-start concerns, the officials also prohibited starts at the pit exit for the remaining weekend running.

Sunday warm-up

Overnight rain left a slippery surface for warm-up, and teams moved from wet tyres to dry compounds as the sun dried the track. Häkkinen led David Coulthard, while Michael Schumacher checked both Ferraris available to him. Heinz-Harald Frentzen damaged a driveshaft component in an excursion, adding work before the race.

What happened in the 2000 French Grand Prix?

Schumacher held the lead at the start and Rubens Barrichello moved ahead of David Coulthard, giving Ferrari the first two places. David Coulthard eventually passed Rubens Barrichello at the Adelaide hairpin and began closing on Schumacher. Their first encounter was tense, but David Coulthard returned to the attack and took the lead with a determined move at the same corner.

McLaren‘s tyres and race pace proved stronger as the stints developed. Häkkinen also passed Schumacher, whose Ferrari then suffered engine failure. David Coulthard retained the lead through his final stop and managed the remaining distance to secure victory.

Häkkinen finished second and Rubens Barrichello third after a delayed wheel change weakened his challenge. Jacques Villeneuve took fourth, Ralf Schumacher fifth and Jarno Trulli sixth. Schumacher’s retirement reduced his championship lead over David Coulthard to twelve points, while McLaren closed to within six of Ferrari.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 56 points, followed by David Coulthard on 44. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 88, with McLaren on 82.
