Mika Häkkinen dominated the Austrian Grand Prix at the A1 Ring after a chaotic opening corner eliminated Michael Schumacher. David Coulthard finished second and Rubens Barrichello recovered to third, but a post-race penalty reduced McLaren‘s constructors’ points haul.

Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 10 leading the 2000 F1 World Championship on 56 points, with David Coulthard on 44. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 88 points.

Race entries

Eddie Irvine withdrew after Friday practice because of abdominal pain. Jaguar test driver Luciano Burti stepped in for his Formula 1 debut, with little time to learn the circuit or prepare the car before qualifying.

Free Practice

Rubens Barrichello led Friday’s first practice as the track gradually gained grip. Häkkinen managed only an out-lap before a fuel-pump failure stopped his McLaren at Remus. Jarno Trulli and Ricardo Zonta were among the quicker runners as teams worked through their opening checks.

David Coulthard set Friday’s fastest time ahead of Häkkinen, with Mika Salo third for Sauber. Ralf Schumacher stopped with an electrical failure, and David Coulthard also had contact with the slowing Eddie Irvine. Eddie Irvine‘s illness then forced Jaguar to replace him for the rest of the weekend.

Häkkinen led David Coulthard in Saturday’s first practice, ahead of the Ferraris. Luciano Burti completed only an installation lap, leaving his introduction to the Jaguar heavily compressed. The session began dry, but changing grip and later dampness made the learning task harder for the newcomer.

Häkkinen improved slightly in final practice before running onto the grass and becoming stranded in the gravel. A brief shower complicated the session, although McLaren remained first and second overall. Heinz-Harald Frentzen found a more comfortable setup after earlier struggles, while Ricardo Zonta spun and caused an approaching driver to take avoiding action.

Qualifying

Häkkinen secured pole with a 1:10.410, ahead of David Coulthard in another McLaren front-row lockout. Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher occupied the second row. Early concern over rain sent most drivers out promptly before conditions improved again.

Jarno Trulli qualified fifth, with Ricardo Zonta and Jacques Villeneuve following for BAR. Williams struggled badly, Jenson Button eighteenth and Ralf Schumacher nineteenth. Luciano Burti qualified twenty-first on his debut after his limited practice, splitting the Minardis and earning a place on the grid.

Sunday warm-up

Rubens Barrichello topped warm-up ahead of the McLarens, with Jos Verstappen fourth after showing strong early pace. Häkkinen again visited the gravel at the last corner. David Coulthard ran wide and later required a replacement nose after contact with a Jordan, leaving McLaren some final repairs despite its speed.

What happened in the 2000 Austrian Grand Prix?

Häkkinen led away while contact behind him triggered a multi-car first-corner incident. Ricardo Zonta hit Michael Schumacher, and further contact ended the Ferrari driver’s race. Rubens Barrichello escaped through the gravel with damage, while the McLarens were left in a strong position after the safety-car period.

Häkkinen pulled clear and controlled the race. De la Pedro de la Rosa ran an impressive third before gearbox trouble forced him out, allowing Rubens Barrichello to complete the podium behind David Coulthard. Jacques Villeneuve finished fourth, Jenson Button fifth and Mika Salo sixth, while the two Prosts collided and retired.

Häkkinen retained his victory and drivers’ points after an investigation into a missing seal on an electronic control unit. McLaren nevertheless lost the ten constructors’ points attached to his win, so Ferrari remained ahead in the team standings. David Coulthard was now only six points behind Schumacher in the drivers’ championship.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 56 points, followed by David Coulthard on 50. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 92, with McLaren on 88.
