Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 8 leading the 2000 F1 World Championship on 46 points, with David Coulthard on 34. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 68 points.

Race entries

All teams retained their drivers, including Ralf Schumacher after his leg injury in Monaco. The Montreal circuit’s heavy braking zones and close barriers promised another demanding test for cars and drivers.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher narrowly led Rubens Barrichello in Friday’s first session as Ferrari began strongly. Nick Heidfeld crashed and damaged his Prost‘s front suspension early on. Ricardo Zonta also lost control twice as teams adjusted their setups and searched for confidence through the chicanes.

David Coulthard moved to the front in the afternoon, with the Ferraris next and Johnny Herbert an encouraging fourth for Jaguar. Häkkinen reported understeer and difficult handling. Much of the work centred on refining the cars through the circuit’s braking zones while preserving stability over the kerbs.

Häkkinen led Saturday’s first practice, but David Coulthard missed the session while McLaren changed his engine following an electrical fault. Williams also replaced Ralf Schumacher‘s engine after oil-pressure concerns and revised his setup. Cooler, breezier conditions changed the balance teams had established on Friday.

David Coulthard returned to set the final session’s fastest lap. Nick Heidfeld‘s engine failure spread oil that caught out Alexander Wurz, while Jean Alesi stopped after running out of fuel. Pedro Diniz damaged his Sauber‘s chassis and undertray on a kerb and needed the spare car for qualifying.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher edged David Coulthard by 0.098 seconds for pole with a 1:18.439. Rubens Barrichello and Häkkinen filled the second row, followed by Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jacques Villeneuve. Wind, traffic and a slippery surface made the contest less straightforward than the close times suggested.

Jos Verstappen‘s crash caused a stoppage and forced him into the spare Arrows. Jenson Button encountered fuel-pickup trouble and qualified eighteenth, while Gaston Mazzacane used multiple Minardi cars before securing his place. Both Williams drivers found the circuit’s slower corners difficult for their machinery.

What happened in the 2000 Canadian Grand Prix?

Schumacher led from the start, while Jacques Villeneuve jumped to third and held up the cars behind. David Coulthard received a stop-and-go penalty because his mechanics had worked on the car too late before the formation lap, removing the leading McLaren from the immediate fight.

Rain arrived around the pit-stop phase and grew heavier as the race progressed. Ferrari emerged first and second, while Giancarlo Fisichella‘s well-timed switch to wet tyres brought him into podium contention. Schumacher survived a brief excursion and managed a technical concern as Rubens Barrichello closed in the final laps.

The Ferraris finished together, with Giancarlo Fisichella third and Häkkinen fourth. Jos Verstappen passed cars in the wet to take fifth, ahead of Jarno Trulli. Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher collided late on, while David Coulthard finished seventh outside the points. Schumacher’s fifth win of the year restored a comfortable championship cushion.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 56 points, followed by David Coulthard on 34. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 84, with McLaren on 66.
