Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 11 leading the 2000 F1 World Championship on 56 points, with David Coulthard on 50. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 92 points.

Race entries

Eddie Irvine returned to Jaguar after missing Austria through illness, restoring the team’s regular partnership with Johnny Herbert. The other ten teams kept their race drivers.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher led the opening practice before rain made the circuit increasingly slippery. Jarno Trulli lost running to an engine failure at the Ostkurve, while Jenson Button damaged his front wing in a crash near the pit entrance after the session. The changing surface made preparation more demanding than the early times suggested.

Heavy rain initially prevented improvements in the second session, with competitive laps coming only as the track dried. Heinz-Harald Frentzen moved into second on the day’s combined times, while both Minardis went off. Ralf Schumacher also lost half the session while Williams replaced his engine.

Häkkinen led Saturday’s first practice as a drying line emerged. Damp patches remained dangerous: Ralf Schumacher crashed near the first corner, and Jean Alesi became stranded after a rear-suspension failure. De la Pedro de la Rosa‘s second-fastest time underlined Arrows‘ straight-line speed on the long forest sections.

Häkkinen improved again as the circuit dried completely in final practice. Giancarlo Fisichella‘s engine failed near the end, while Michael Schumacher slid backwards into the barrier after the session. Ferrari therefore had to prepare the spare car for qualifying despite Schumacher finishing the morning second overall.

Qualifying

David Coulthard made the most of the shifting weather to take pole with a 1:45.697. Michael Schumacher improved late to join him on the front row, ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and Häkkinen. De la Pedro de la Rosa secured an excellent fifth in the spare Arrows.

Rubens Barrichello suffered an oil leak and had to switch cars, losing the opportunity to exploit the best conditions. He qualified eighteenth, while both Williams drivers also struggled with the timing of the rain. The mixed grid promised a very different challenge from an ordinary dry qualifying session.

Sunday warm-up

David Coulthard headed warm-up but damaged his car in a spin and switched to the spare McLaren. Jacques Villeneuve and Jos Verstappen collided at the Jim Clark chicane, leaving both cars stranded. Nick Heidfeld then lost his engine cover, and debris contributed to a puncture for De la Pedro de la Rosa in a particularly disrupted final rehearsal.

What happened in the 2000 German Grand Prix?

Häkkinen swept into the lead as Michael Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella collided and retired at the first corner. Rubens Barrichello immediately began cutting through the field, climbing to third before his first stop. The McLarens nevertheless held a commanding advantage until a track intruder prompted a safety-car period and erased their lead.

A second safety car followed Jean Alesi‘s heavy accident after contact with Pedro Diniz. Rain then soaked the stadium section while much of the forest remained dry. Häkkinen stopped for wet tyres, but Rubens Barrichello stayed on dry tyres, balancing caution through the wet corners against speed on the drier parts of the lap.

Rubens Barrichello‘s gamble delivered an emotional maiden victory, with Häkkinen second and David Coulthard third. Jenson Button recovered from starting at the back to take fourth, ahead of Mika Salo and De la Pedro de la Rosa. Schumacher retained the championship lead, but both McLaren drivers were now only two points behind him.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 56 points, followed by David Coulthard on 54. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 102, with McLaren on 98.
