Championship background

Mika Häkkinen arrived at round 14 leading the 2000 F1 World Championship on 74 points, with Michael Schumacher on 68. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 125 points.

Race entries

All eleven teams retained their regular drivers for the season’s final European round. The cars carried low-downforce setups for Monza‘s long straights, while the revised first chicane was a prominent concern before the start.

Free Practice

Rubens Barrichello led the first practice on a hot, dry circuit. Häkkinen failed to set a time because his clutch slipped, leaving McLaren to repair the problem before the afternoon. Several drivers used the escape area at the first chicane while adjusting to its demands.

Rubens Barrichello‘s morning time remained fastest overall in the second session. David Coulthard spun into the gravel at Lesmo and damaged his rear suspension, ending his running early. Hydraulic problems also affected Jean Alesi and Alexander Wurz, while Gaston Mazzacane lost time after spinning off.

Michael Schumacher topped Saturday’s first practice, with Jenson Button showing encouraging speed in second. Heinz-Harald Frentzen crashed at Parabolica after running onto the dusty edge of the track, damaging his Jordan. Häkkinen also visited the gravel as the teams sought speed with limited downforce.

Schumacher improved again in final practice, with Häkkinen separating the Ferraris. Heinz-Harald Frentzen missed the session while repairs continued, and Alexander Wurz could not run because of a fuel-system problem. Eddie Irvine recovered from a rear-suspension failure, while another mechanical issue stopped Gaston Mazzacane on track.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher secured pole with a 1:23.770, only 0.027 seconds ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Ferrari locked out the front row after Schumacher adopted elements of his teammate’s setup. Häkkinen qualified third despite handling difficulties and an engine misfire linked to fuel pressure.

Jacques Villeneuve delivered BAR‘s strongest qualifying result to that point in fourth, ahead of David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli. Traffic frustrated David Coulthard, while Ralf Schumacher qualified seventh. The compact margins near the front contrasted with a difficult session for several drivers dealing with mechanical problems.

Sunday warm-up

Ricardo Zonta led warm-up after the morning mist cleared, narrowly beating Häkkinen. David Coulthard spun following a rear-suspension problem but was able to continue, and Eddie Irvine also recovered from a spin. The session otherwise gave the teams a dry final opportunity to check their race setups.

What happened in the 2000 Italian Grand Prix?

Schumacher held the lead at the start as Häkkinen moved into second. A multi-car accident at the second chicane eliminated several leading runners, including Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard and both Jordans. A detached wheel struck marshal Paolo Gislimberti, who died from his injuries. The safety car was deployed while the wreckage was cleared.

Jenson Button retired after taking avoiding action as the field slowed before the restart. Once racing resumed, Schumacher steadily built an advantage over Häkkinen and retained control through the pit stops. Jacques Villeneuve‘s retirement removed another podium contender, while differing fuel strategies briefly brought Jos Verstappen and Ricardo Zonta into the battle near the front.

Schumacher took his forty-first victory, equalling Ayrton Senna‘s total, with Häkkinen second and Ralf Schumacher third. Jos Verstappen, Alexander Wurz and Ricardo Zonta completed the points scorers. Schumacher reduced Häkkinen’s championship lead to two points, although the sporting result remained secondary to the loss suffered by the marshalling community.

After the race, Mika Häkkinen headed the drivers’ standings with 80 points, followed by Michael Schumacher on 78. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 131, with Ferrari on 127.
