Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 3 leading the 2000 F1 World Championship on 20 points, with Giancarlo Fisichella on 8. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 26 points.

Race entries

Sauber returned with Mika Salo and Pedro Diniz after withdrawing from Brazil to investigate its rear-wing failures. The regular eleven-team field was otherwise unchanged for the first European round.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher led Friday’s first practice as a damp circuit gradually dried. David Coulthard and Eddie Irvine followed, while several drivers ventured off as grip improved unevenly. The changing conditions meant teams had to adjust their programmes rather than rely on a consistent track throughout the hour.

Schumacher stayed quickest in the afternoon, with Rubens Barrichello completing a Ferrari one-two. Jacques Villeneuve‘s engine failure spread oil onto the circuit and caused difficulties for other drivers. Jenson Button also stopped with a failed engine late in the session, adding another setback to Williams‘ early-season reliability record.

Schumacher again headed the first Saturday session, followed by the two McLarens. Nick Heidfeld recovered from a trip through the Tamburello gravel. Ralf Schumacher had a more costly excursion when braking trouble sent him off and damaged his front wing, interrupting his qualifying preparation.

Häkkinen moved ahead in final practice, narrowly beating Schumacher’s benchmark. Gené crashed heavily at Piratella and went for precautionary medical checks, while Jacques Villeneuve spun into the gravel. Ralf Schumacher stopped with a throttle mechanism fault, leaving Williams with further repairs before qualifying.

Qualifying

Häkkinen claimed his third consecutive pole with a 1:24.714, just 0.091 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello occupied the second row. Schumacher lost time on his final run after accidentally activating the speed limiter, while Häkkinen’s late improvement proved enough.

Ralf Schumacher qualified fifth despite another engine problem, ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Eddie Irvine. Gené had to share Gaston Mazzacane‘s Minardi after his practice crash and a problem with the spare car. Nick Heidfeld qualified last after difficulties starting his Prost forced him into a spare set up for Jean Alesi.

Sunday warm-up

Häkkinen led David Coulthard in warm-up, ahead of the Ferraris. Michael Schumacher overshot his pit position and knocked the front-jack mechanic onto the car’s nose, although the mechanic was unhurt. Several drivers visited the gravel as teams completed their final checks in cool, overcast conditions.

What happened in the 2000 San Marino Grand Prix?

Häkkinen led from pole while Schumacher held off David Coulthard, allowing Rubens Barrichello to take third. The leading pair pulled clear, and Häkkinen retained the advantage after their first stops. His task became harder when debris damaged the McLaren‘s floor and an electronic problem briefly interrupted the engine.

Ferrari had fuelled Schumacher for a longer second stint. When Häkkinen stopped again, Schumacher used the extra laps to build a margin and emerged ahead after his own shorter stop. Häkkinen closed late, but Schumacher held on to win by just over a second.

David Coulthard beat Rubens Barrichello to third through the pit sequence, while Jacques Villeneuve and Mika Salo completed the points. Ralf Schumacher retired with fuel-supply trouble and Jarno Trulli lost a likely points finish to gearbox problems. Schumacher’s perfect opening run gave Ferrari a substantial early advantage.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 30 points, followed by Rubens Barrichello on 9. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 39, with McLaren on 10.
