Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 4 leading the 2000 F1 World Championship on 30 points, with Rubens Barrichello on 9. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 39 points.

Race entries

The driver line-ups were unchanged, but the unusual Easter date brought cold weather and severe access problems around Silverstone. BAR also arrived with revised suspension components after Ricardo Zonta‘s heavy accident during pre-race testing.

Free Practice

Heinz-Harald Frentzen led Friday’s first practice before heavy rain transformed the circuit. Ralf Schumacher failed to set a time after an electrical problem stopped him near the pit exit, and Johnny Herbert lost running to an engine-valve pressure issue. The early dry laps remained important as conditions deteriorated.

The afternoon was too wet for improvements, with spray and standing water making visibility poor. David Coulthard stopped with hydraulic trouble on the Hangar Straight, prompting a lengthy red flag. Even the recovery vehicle became stuck in the mud, and the session was shortened rather than extended to replace all the lost time.

David Coulthard headed Saturday’s wet opening practice, but Jenson Button and Eddie Irvine were involved in a costly gravel-trap collision. Jenson Button had already slid off when Eddie Irvine‘s Jaguar struck his stationary Williams. Both drivers escaped injury, while Pedro Diniz separately damaged his Sauber against the barriers.

Häkkinen set the quickest time as the circuit began to dry in final practice. Jenson Button and Eddie Irvine missed the session while their cars were repaired. Jean Alesi suffered an engine failure, while Jacques Villeneuve narrowly avoided the barriers after another excursion, leaving several teams with compromised qualifying preparation.

Qualifying

Rubens Barrichello took his first Ferrari pole with a 1:25.703, only 0.003 seconds ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen. The drying track produced repeated changes at the top as drivers moved onto suitable tyres. Häkkinen qualified third and David Coulthard fourth, with Michael Schumacher fifth.

Jenson Button recovered from his morning accident to qualify sixth ahead of Ralf Schumacher. Jos Verstappen briefly appeared at the top before ending eighth, with Eddie Irvine ninth in his repaired Jaguar. The timing of the final runs proved crucial, and Schumacher missed the opportunity for one more attempt.

Sunday warm-up

Heavy fog delayed warm-up by 100 minutes because the medical helicopter could not operate. Once running began at 10:10, David Coulthard led Pedro de la Rosa and Ralf Schumacher. Häkkinen used the spare McLaren after a sensor fault, and Nick Heidfeld‘s detached engine cover brought out yellow flags.

What happened in the 2000 British Grand Prix?

Rubens Barrichello led away from Heinz-Harald Frentzen while David Coulthard moved ahead of Häkkinen. Michael Schumacher lost ground in the opening corners and became trapped behind Jacques Villeneuve. Once Heinz-Harald Frentzen stopped, David Coulthard closed on Rubens Barrichello and passed him around the outside at Stowe as the Ferrari developed technical problems.

Rubens Barrichello retired with hydraulic trouble, leaving the pit sequence to settle the remaining contest. David Coulthard emerged ahead of Häkkinen and protected the lead despite a late gearbox concern. Michael Schumacher‘s longer stint helped recover third, limiting the damage to his championship position.

Ralf Schumacher finished fourth and Jenson Button fifth, with Jarno Trulli taking the final point after late problems for Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jacques Villeneuve. David Coulthard‘s second successive British Grand Prix victory ended Ferrari‘s winning start and gave McLaren a much-needed maximum score.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 34 points, followed by David Coulthard on 14. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 43, with McLaren on 26.
