Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 12 leading the 2000 F1 World Championship on 56 points, with David Coulthard on 54. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 102 points.

Race entries

The eleven teams arrived with unchanged driver line-ups. Jean Alesi returned to race action after his heavy German Grand Prix accident, continuing alongside Nick Heidfeld at Prost.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher waited while other cars cleaned the dusty circuit before setting the fastest time in opening practice. McLaren chose to conserve tyres and did not run. Several teams concentrated on their high-downforce packages, with the slippery surface making early setup comparisons difficult.

McLaren joined the action in the afternoon and David Coulthard finished fastest ahead of Häkkinen. Low grip continued to catch drivers out, and De la Pedro de la Rosa crashed into the tyre barrier without injury. The faster times reflected the improving surface as well as the arrival of the two championship contenders.

Rubens Barrichello edged David Coulthard by just one thousandth of a second in Saturday’s first practice. De la Pedro de la Rosa again had a moment at the final corner, while Gaston Mazzacane‘s session was disrupted by a mechanical failure. Hot, dry conditions gave the teams a more consistent basis for their qualifying preparations.

Michael Schumacher found a substantial improvement in final practice, finishing over six-tenths clear of David Coulthard. Teams refined their setups and prepared tyres on a circuit that remained dusty off line. Pedro Diniz briefly became stranded at the pit entrance after stalling, while Häkkinen ended the morning only sixth.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher claimed pole with a 1:17.514, ahead of David Coulthard and Häkkinen. The increasingly hot surface complicated the search for grip, and Häkkinen made significant setup changes during the session. Ralf Schumacher secured fourth, his best qualifying position of the season.

Rubens Barrichello qualified fifth ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jenson Button. Giancarlo Fisichella was frustrated by traffic involving Michael Schumacher after Ferrari‘s attempted radio warning went to the wrong car. Further back, BAR and Arrows struggled to generate the grip needed for the circuit’s slow corners.

Sunday warm-up

Overnight rain washed the circuit before a hot, sunny warm-up. David Coulthard led the Ferraris and used a lap in the spare car to help clean his starting position. Eddie Irvine suffered an engine failure, leaving Jaguar with urgent work before the race.

What happened in the 2000 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Häkkinen launched brilliantly from third, passing David Coulthard and diving inside Michael Schumacher at the first corner. He steadily opened a gap as Schumacher concentrated on keeping the other McLaren behind. Ralf Schumacher initially held fourth, but a delayed pit stop helped Rubens Barrichello move ahead.

Häkkinen controlled the two-stop contest despite a failed drinks system in the punishing heat. David Coulthard closed on Schumacher but could not convert his pace into an overtake, and Ferrari retained second through the final stops. The tight circuit and traffic made a clear run especially valuable.

Häkkinen won by nearly eight seconds, with Schumacher and David Coulthard completing the podium. Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher and Heinz-Harald Frentzen took the remaining points. Häkkinen now led Schumacher by two points, while McLaren moved ahead of Ferrari in the constructors’ championship.

After the race, Mika Häkkinen headed the drivers’ standings with 64 points, followed by Michael Schumacher on 62. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 112, with Ferrari on 111.
