Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 7 leading the 2000 F1 World Championship on 46 points, with Mika Häkkinen on 28. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 62 points.

Race entries

The regular field continued into Monaco, with Thursday practice and a clear Friday before the weekend resumed. The narrow streets made familiarity especially valuable for the season’s three newcomers.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher led the first Thursday session ahead of Häkkinen, while Jean Alesi showed encouraging speed despite gearbox trouble. Ralf Schumacher damaged his Williams against a barrier near the tunnel entrance. Gaston Mazzacane also hit the wall at La Rascasse, losing a wheel and valuable track time.

Häkkinen set the day’s fastest lap in the afternoon, but the barriers caught several others. Alexander Wurz crashed at the Swimming Pool, while Nick Heidfeld and Pedro Diniz each hit the wall at La Rascasse. Pedro Diniz‘s accident left oil for marshals to clear, further complicating the running on a busy circuit.

Michael Schumacher led Saturday’s opening practice, narrowly ahead of Häkkinen and Rubens Barrichello. Jean Alesi continued to impress in fourth as Prost found useful pace on the streets. Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Alexander Wurz had excursions without damaging their cars, allowing them to continue preparing for the decisive qualifying hour.

David Coulthard topped final practice before taking the Sainte Devote escape road and stalling to avoid the barrier. Giancarlo Fisichella improved to third after a damper change, while Eddie Irvine crashed at the Swimming Pool. Traffic remained a major obstacle to completing clean laps as qualifying approached.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher took pole with a 1:19.475, despite brushing the barrier near Portier. Jarno Trulli delivered an excellent second for Jordan, ahead of David Coulthard and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Häkkinen struggled with understeer and traffic to qualify fifth, with Rubens Barrichello sixth.

Jean Alesi qualified seventh after switching to the spare Prost, while Giancarlo Fisichella and Ralf Schumacher followed. The session brought further incidents, including Pedro de la Rosa‘s crash and Jacques Villeneuve‘s engine failure. Both Minardis also hit the barriers at La Rascasse, reinforcing how unforgiving a single mistake could be.

What happened in the 2000 Monaco Grand Prix?

The start was delayed and then the first attempt was stopped, with a tangle at the hairpin also blocking the circuit. At the eventual restart, Schumacher led Jarno Trulli and quickly built a large advantage as David Coulthard waited behind the Jordan. Jarno Trulli‘s gearbox failure later released the McLaren into second.

Schumacher appeared set for victory until a cracked exhaust overheated a rear-suspension mounting, forcing him out. David Coulthard inherited the lead and controlled the remaining distance. Heinz-Harald Frentzen then crashed from second late on, promoting Rubens Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella onto the podium.

Eddie Irvine finished fourth for Jaguar‘s first points, ahead of Mika Salo and Häkkinen, who had lost time clearing a loose component from behind his brake pedal. Ralf Schumacher suffered a leg injury in his accident. David Coulthard‘s win reduced Michael Schumacher‘s championship lead to twelve points.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 46 points, followed by David Coulthard on 34. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 68, with McLaren on 63.
