Championship background

Fernando Alonso arrived at round 6 leading the 2005 F1 World Championship on 44 points, with Jarno Trulli on 26. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 58 points.

Race entries

BAR served the second race of its suspension, again leaving 18 race cars. Alexander Wurz handled McLaren’s extra-car running on Thursday, while Christian Klien continued in Red Bull’s third car alongside race drivers David Coulthard and Vitantonio Liuzzi. Red Bull marked the weekend with a Star Wars livery and themed pit-crew outfits.

Free Practice

Juan Pablo Montoya led Thursday’s opening session as the drivers built confidence on the dusty streets. Toyota found the lack of grip particularly difficult: Ricardo Zonta’s initial set-up proved unsuitable, costing him useful preparation, while Jarno Trulli struggled to find a balance that responded to changes. Monaco’s rapidly evolving surface made those first impressions an uncertain guide to the rest of the weekend.

Fernando Alonso topped the afternoon, while Felipe Massa hit the barriers at Sainte Dévote near the end. Ricardo Zonta concentrated on longer runs but remained unhappy with his balance, and yellow flags and traffic spoiled his late attempt on fresh tyres. Jarno Trulli also struggled despite the improving surface, leaving Toyota with a difficult tyre decision before Saturday.

Juan Pablo Montoya was quickest again when running resumed on Saturday morning. Ralf Schumacher completed 16 laps and showed encouraging pace, while Jarno Trulli remained further down the order as Toyota continued its recovery from Thursday’s poor grip. With no Friday F1 running, this session was the first chance to judge the cars on the weekend’s more developed track surface.

Giancarlo Fisichella headed Fernando Alonso in final practice, but an incident involving the slow-moving Juan Pablo Montoya, Ralf Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve and David Coulthard had much greater consequences. David Coulthard’s Red Bull needed substantial repairs, and Juan Pablo Montoya was later punished for his role. Toyota also repaired Ralf Schumacher’s car before qualifying, turning an encouraging morning into a hurried rebuilding exercise.

Qualifying

Kimi Räikkönen set the fastest Saturday lap ahead of Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber. Ralf Schumacher crashed at Tabac, bringing out the red flags and leaving oil and debris that compromised Jarno Trulli’s following run. Juan Pablo Montoya’s first-session time was deleted over the practice incident, sending him towards the back of the grid.

Kimi Räikkönen completed the job on Sunday to take aggregate pole, ahead of Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Giancarlo Fisichella. This was the final appearance of the two-session aggregate format: from the next round, one race-fuelled lap on Saturday would decide qualifying. Juan Pablo Montoya started sixteenth, with Ralf Schumacher seventeenth.

Narain Karthikeyan received a 10-place grid penalty for an engine change.

Ralf Schumacher received a 10-place grid penalty for an engine change. In addition, his total time was added by 0.5 seconds for using the wrong tire in practice.

Juan Pablo Montoya‘s Saturday time of 1:14.858 deleted as punishment for role in earlier practice accident.

What happened in the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix?

Kimi Räikkönen led from Fernando Alonso before Christijan Albers spun at Mirabeau and partially blocked the circuit. David Coulthard stopped behind him but was struck by Michael Schumacher, ending the Red Bull’s race. The resulting safety car prompted Renault to pit both drivers, while Kimi Räikkönen stayed out.

The McLaren’s pace after the restart made that decision work. Kimi Räikkönen built enough of a cushion to stop and retain the lead, while Fernando Alonso’s heavily fuelled Renault struggled increasingly with rear-tyre wear. Nick Heidfeld gained ground through the pit stops and then passed Fernando Alonso at the Nouvelle Chicane; Mark Webber followed after a determined battle.

Kimi Räikkönen won from Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber, whose third place was his first Formula 1 podium. Fernando Alonso salvaged fourth ahead of the recovering Juan Pablo Montoya. Ralf Schumacher, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello completed the points, while Williams celebrated its strongest result of the season.

After the race, Fernando Alonso headed the drivers’ standings with 49 points, followed by Kimi Räikkönen on 27. Renault led the constructors’ table on 63, with McLaren on 51.
