Fernando Alonso became Formula 1’s youngest world champion with third place in Brazil. Juan Pablo Montoya led Kimi Räikkönen home for a McLaren one-two, but Fernando Alonso’s measured podium finish delivered the title with two races to spare.

Championship background
Fernando Alonso arrived at round 17 leading the 2005 F1 World Championship on 111 points, with Kimi Räikkönen on 86. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 152 points.
Race entries
Antonio Pizzonia continued at Williams after Nick Heidfeld suffered a further injury in a cycling accident. Minardi did not run Toccacelo in its Friday car because he was competing in A1 Grand Prix. Alexander Wurz, Ricardo Zonta, Vitantonio Liuzzi and Kiesa supplied the other teams’ additional practice running.
Free Practice
Alexander Wurz led Friday morning as the teams encountered a dirty, low-grip Interlagos. Toyota found it difficult to draw early tyre conclusions, with bumps in the medium-speed corners still disturbing the cars despite improvements to the surface. Ricardo Zonta completed a substantial programme at home, while the race drivers concentrated on finding a usable balance.
Alexander Wurz remained fastest in the afternoon, with Juan Pablo Montoya next. Christian Klien crashed backwards into the barriers, while Michael Schumacher and Mark Webber also spun. Toyota gained more useful tyre data as grip improved, though traffic frustrated Ricardo Zonta’s fresh-tyre runs and Ralf Schumacher remained unhappy with the car’s grip.
Fernando Alonso narrowly led Giancarlo Fisichella in Saturday’s first practice, showing that Renault had the speed to contest the weekend rather than simply protect its championship position. Toyota continued refining its cars after Friday’s grip problems, with both drivers completing useful mileage. The possibility of rain remained relevant to the weekend’s tyre and set-up decisions.
Kimi Räikkönen went fastest in final practice, with Fernando Alonso close behind. Jarno Trulli’s morning pneumatic-system problem prompted a precautionary engine change before qualifying, bringing a ten-place penalty despite Toyota’s otherwise strong reliability. Ralf Schumacher had found a more competitive lap time in practice, though the balance would deteriorate again in qualifying.

Qualifying
Fernando Alonso took pole ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and Giancarlo Fisichella. Kimi Räikkönen made a costly first-corner error and qualified fifth behind Jenson Button, leaving him with work to do if he was to keep the title alive. Renault’s pace showed that Fernando Alonso was not approaching the weekend merely to settle for the minimum result.
Jarno Trulli’s engine penalty moved him towards the back, while Takuma Sato also carried a grid penalty from his collision with Michael Schumacher at Spa. Jacques Villeneuve subsequently had to start from the pit lane after a parc fermé infringement. Fernando Alonso’s front-row position placed the championship firmly within reach.

Jacques Villeneuve was dropped to the back of the grid for a breach of parc fermé rules.
Takuma Sato did not drive a qualifying lap because she was subject to a ten-place grid penalty given for the accident in the Belgian Grand Prix where he crashed into Michael Schumacher.
Robert Doornbos was left without time in after spinning at turn 12 and aborting the attempt.
What happened in the 2005 Brazilian Grand Prix?
A first-lap collision involving the Williams cars and David Coulthard brought out the safety car. Juan Pablo Montoya then took the lead from Fernando Alonso, while Kimi Räikkönen worked forward to keep McLaren’s hopes alive. Fernando Alonso remained comfortably inside the podium places he needed for the title.
Kimi Räikkönen moved ahead of Fernando Alonso through the pit-stop sequence, but Juan Pablo Montoya retained control at the front. The Renault driver concentrated on bringing his car home, with Michael Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella behind. Tiago Monteiro’s driveshaft failure ended his run of finishing every race that season.
Juan Pablo Montoya led Kimi Räikkönen home for McLaren’s first one-two since the Austrian Grand Prix in 2000. Fernando Alonso’s third place made him the first Spanish world champion and, at the time, the youngest ever. Michael Schumacher, Giancarlo Fisichella, Rubens Barrichello, Jenson Button and Ralf Schumacher completed the points, while McLaren took a narrow constructors’ lead.
After the race, Fernando Alonso headed the drivers’ standings with 117 points, followed by Kimi Räikkönen on 94. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 164, with Renault on 162.
