Championship background

Fernando Alonso arrived at round 8 leading the 2005 F1 World Championship on 59 points, with Kimi Räikkönen on 27. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 76 points.

Race entries

Christian Klien returned to Red Bull’s race seat in place of Vitantonio Liuzzi, while Speed made his Grand Prix weekend debut in the team’s Friday car. Jordan could not run a third car after exceeding the permitted tyre allocation at the previous round. The other race line-ups were unchanged.

Free Practice

De la Pedro de la Rosa led Friday morning on a newly resurfaced Circuit Gilles Jacques Villeneuve. The combination of fresh asphalt and the circuit’s public-road sections left grip low at first, making early balance judgements difficult. Ricardo Zonta completed a busy tyre-performance programme for Toyota, while the race drivers gathered their own set-up data in hot conditions.

De la Pedro de la Rosa stayed quickest in the afternoon as the surface improved. Michael Schumacher went off, and Speed also spun during his first day in Red Bull’s extra car. Ricardo Zonta switched to longer tyre runs, helping Toyota compare consistency as well as speed, while the changing grip made it difficult to separate car improvements from track evolution.

Fernando Alonso led Giancarlo Fisichella in Saturday’s first session. Jarno Trulli’s electronics trouble restricted his morning preparation, leaving him with fewer opportunities to finalise the Toyota’s set-up. The surface remained a talking point after repair work, and finding confidence under braking mattered as much as completing a fast lap around Montreal’s close barriers.

Kimi Räikkönen moved ahead in final practice, with Fernando Alonso still competitive. Ralf Schumacher improved markedly, but Jarno Trulli remained short of running and confidence after his electronics difficulties. Toyota’s contrasting morning left the drivers facing different qualifying challenges: Jarno Trulli needed a clean run despite limited preparation, while Ralf would have to cope with an early slot on the evolving track.

Qualifying

Jenson Button took pole ahead of Michael Schumacher, with Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella filling the second row. Kimi Räikkönen qualified seventh after running relatively early because of his Nürburgring retirement. The single-lap, race-fuel format again mixed outright speed with starting order and strategy.

Rubens Barrichello’s gearbox failed before he could complete his qualifying lap. Ferrari subsequently chose a pit-lane start and a heavier fuel load, giving him a very different route through the race. Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher occupied the fifth row after a difficult morning for Toyota.

What happened in the 2005 Canadian Grand Prix?

Both Renaults launched past the front row, with Giancarlo Fisichella leading Fernando Alonso. Their strong position collapsed in the middle of the race: Giancarlo Fisichella retired with hydraulic trouble, then Fernando Alonso hit the wall and damaged his suspension. Juan Pablo Montoya took the lead ahead of Kimi Räikkönen as Renault’s afternoon unravelled.

Jenson Button crashed at the final chicane, bringing out the safety car and triggering the decisive pit stops. Kimi Räikkönen stopped first, while Juan Pablo Montoya stayed out an extra lap and then left the pits against a red light. The resulting disqualification ended Juan Pablo Montoya’s challenge and left Kimi Räikkönen defending against Michael Schumacher.

Kimi Räikkönen held on to win, with Schumacher second and Rubens Barrichello completing a remarkable recovery from the pit lane to third. Felipe Massa finished fourth ahead of Mark Webber, Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard and Christian Klien. With Fernando Alonso failing to score, Kimi Räikkönen reduced the championship gap to 22 points.

After the race, Fernando Alonso headed the drivers’ standings with 59 points, followed by Kimi Räikkönen on 37. Renault led the constructors’ table on 76, with McLaren on 63.
