Championship background

Fernando Alonso arrived at round 13 leading the 2005 F1 World Championship on 87 points, with Kimi Räikkönen on 51. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 117 points.

Race entries

The race line-ups were unchanged, but Nissany made his only Grand Prix weekend appearance in Minardi’s extra car during Friday morning practice. Alexander Wurz continued McLaren’s third-car work, with Ricardo Zonta at Toyota and Kiesa at Jordan. Toyota brought a high-downforce package tailored to the Hungaroring.

Free Practice

Alexander Wurz led the opening session, while Nissany’s debut ended in the gravel after he lapped well off the regular field’s pace. Toyota encountered a surprisingly bumpy surface despite resurfacing, forcing changes to help the cars under braking. Ricardo Zonta’s hydraulic trouble interrupted his tyre work, requiring the race drivers to help cover the programme.

Ricardo Zonta recovered to set the fastest afternoon lap, despite another interruption when debris blocked a cooling duct and overheated electrical components. Michael Schumacher stopped on his out-lap and recorded no time, while Rubens Barrichello spun late on. Toyota’s race drivers showed stronger pace with the special aerodynamic package, although Jarno Trulli also had a brief spin on the dusty surface.

Kimi Räikkönen led Michael Schumacher in Saturday’s first session, with Ferrari now looking more competitive than on Friday afternoon. Toyota’s drivers reported poor grip on the slippery surface, so the team waited until the latter half of the session before running and concentrated on improving mechanical grip. That limited early mileage placed greater importance on the final practice.

Kimi Räikkönen again headed Juan Pablo Montoya in final practice. Jarno Trulli’s fuel-system problem cost him running and prevented a fresh-tyre check, leaving him to judge the qualifying balance without that rehearsal. Ralf Schumacher enjoyed a fuller programme and remained near the front, reinforcing Toyota’s hopes of a strong result in the heat.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher stunned the field with his first pole of the season, almost nine-tenths clear of Juan Pablo Montoya. Jarno Trulli took third despite his disrupted practice, while Kimi Räikkönen managed fourth after running first on the dusty circuit. Ralf Schumacher and Fernando Alonso completed the first three rows.

Fuel strategy remained central to interpreting the order, especially at a circuit where passing was difficult. Ferrari had secured the best possible starting position, but Kimi Räikkönen’s lap kept him close enough to challenge. Fernando Alonso faced a more awkward opening from the outside of the third row.

What happened in the 2005 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Kimi Räikkönen quickly moved into second behind Michael Schumacher. Fernando Alonso damaged his front wing in contact with Ralf Schumacher, while Christian Klien rolled after touching Jacques Villeneuve and David Coulthard retired after hitting Fernando Alonso’s discarded wing. Both Red Bulls were out before the race had settled.

Kimi Räikkönen pressured Schumacher and moved ahead through the second round of stops. Juan Pablo Montoya’s transmission failure ended the other McLaren’s challenge, leaving Kimi Räikkönen free to build a decisive advantage. Fernando Alonso’s early repair stop left him trapped in a recovery that never reached the points.

Kimi Räikkönen won comfortably, while Michael Schumacher resisted his brother’s late pressure for second. Jarno Trulli finished fourth ahead of Jenson Button, Nick Heidfeld, Mark Webber and Takuma Sato, who scored his first point of the year. Fernando Alonso’s eleventh place allowed Kimi Räikkönen to cut the championship gap by ten points.

After the race, Fernando Alonso headed the drivers’ standings with 87 points, followed by Kimi Räikkönen on 61. Renault led the constructors’ table on 117, with McLaren on 105.
