Championship background

Fernando Alonso arrived at round 15 leading the 2005 F1 World Championship on 95 points, with Kimi Räikkönen on 71. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 130 points.

Race entries

Nick Heidfeld took part on Friday but withdrew with headaches following his recent testing accident. Antonio Pizzonia replaced him at Williams from Saturday, making an unexpected return alongside Mark Webber. The other race seats were unchanged, with Pedro de la Rosa, Ricardo Zonta, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Kiesa and Toccacelo adding third-car running on Friday.

Free Practice

De la Pedro de la Rosa led Friday morning by a substantial margin as several teams limited running after the previous week’s Monza test. Toyota’s race drivers completed only installation laps, using the existing data to conserve mileage. Ricardo Zonta continued the tyre work but initially struggled for grip, even though the surface was familiar from testing.

Ricardo Zonta headed the afternoon after Toyota improved his car and found a useful tyre direction. Michael Schumacher spun into the barriers at Parabolica, while Kiesa suffered an engine failure. McLaren remained strong, and Toyota’s race drivers completed their programmes without trouble as they balanced straight-line speed against grip through the corners.

Kimi Räikkönen led Saturday’s first session, while Antonio Pizzonia began his hurried preparation in Nick Heidfeld’s Williams. Michael Schumacher was much closer to the front in the cooler conditions, offering Ferrari some encouragement after Friday’s accident. For Antonio Pizzonia, the morning was an essential opportunity to regain race-weekend rhythm before his single qualifying lap.

Kimi Räikkönen again topped final practice, but a loss of engine power forced McLaren to make another unscheduled change before qualifying. The ten-place penalty transformed his race prospects despite the car’s speed. Ralf Schumacher also finished the morning unhappy with his Toyota’s set-up, prompting changes before qualifying to improve its behaviour over the kerbs.

Qualifying

Kimi Räikkönen set the fastest time, but his engine-change penalty dropped him to eleventh on the grid. Juan Pablo Montoya therefore took the official pole position, ahead of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. Takuma Sato and Jarno Trulli completed the first five starters.

Antonio Pizzonia qualified sixteenth after his late call-up, while Mark Webber took fourteenth. McLaren’s pace offered Kimi Räikkönen a chance to recover through strategy, but Juan Pablo Montoya now carried the immediate challenge to Renault at the front.

Kimi Räikkönen received a 10-place grid penalty for an engine change.

What happened in the 2005 Italian Grand Prix?

Juan Pablo Montoya led from the start and controlled the race, with Fernando Alonso keeping him within reach. Kimi Räikkönen made progress on a long first stint, but a tyre problem forced an additional stop and spoiled his attempt to recover through a one-stop strategy.

Giancarlo Fisichella moved into podium contention, while Kimi Räikkönen continued charging despite his setback. Juan Pablo Montoya developed his own left-rear tyre concern near the finish and had to protect the car as Fernando Alonso closed. Ferrari endured another difficult afternoon without points on home ground.

Juan Pablo Montoya won by 2.5 seconds from Fernando Alonso, with Giancarlo Fisichella third and Kimi Räikkönen fourth. Jarno Trulli, Ralf Schumacher, Antonio Pizzonia and Jenson Button completed the points. All 20 starters finished, while Fernando Alonso increased his championship lead to 27 points with four rounds remaining.

After the race, Fernando Alonso headed the drivers’ standings with 103 points, followed by Kimi Räikkönen on 76. Renault led the constructors’ table on 144, with McLaren on 136.
