Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 12 leading the 2002 F1 World Championship on 96 points, with Juan Pablo Montoya on 34. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 128 points.

Hockenheim’s long forest straights had been replaced by a much shorter layout, including a long curve towards a tight hairpin. The change demanded different aerodynamic settings and offered new overtaking opportunities, while Ferrari now focused on completing its constructors’ championship campaign.

Race entries

Giancarlo Fisichella returned after missing the French race following his practice accident. Arrows also resumed normal competition with Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Enrique Bernoldi, although this would prove to be the team’s final Grand Prix. Alex Yoong entered but failed to qualify.

Free Practice

Rubens Barrichello led the first Friday session as drivers learned the revised circuit on a damp, low-grip surface. Giancarlo Fisichella damaged a bargeboard in the gravel, Pedro de la Rosa suffered an engine failure and David Coulthard lost running with a driveshaft-joint problem. The new corners gave everyone plenty to assess.

Michael Schumacher headed Rubens Barrichello in the afternoon. Giancarlo Fisichella’s engine failure left oil near the first corner and caught out Felipe Massa, while Jarno Trulli became stuck in the Sachs gravel. Alex Yoong stranded his Minardi on a kerb and Olivier Panis lost much of the session with a suspected clutch problem.

Michael Schumacher narrowly led Rubens Barrichello in the first Saturday session. Jenson Button accidentally selected neutral at the first corner and touched the tyre wall backwards. Rubens Barrichello also spun through the gravel and lightly contacted the wall at the final corner, but remained near the top of the times.

Michael Schumacher improved substantially in the last practice as more rubber went down and drivers became familiar with the track limits. There were fewer excursions than earlier, although Takuma Sato missed the running because of an exhaust-related problem. Ralf Schumacher finished closest to the leading Ferrari in the combined order.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher ended Juan Pablo Montoya’s run of pole positions by beating Ralf Schumacher in the closing seconds. Rubens Barrichello qualified third ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Räikkönen. Giancarlo Fisichella matched Jordan’s best starting position of the season with sixth.

Alex Yoong again failed to meet the 107 per cent requirement and was denied permission to start. Allan McNish outqualified Mika Salo for the first time, while several drivers struggled to keep their cars balanced as the unfamiliar surface evolved.

Sunday warm-up

Michael Schumacher led another Ferrari one-two in the hot Sunday warm-up. The track continued to gain grip, with relatively few mistakes. Heinz-Harald Frentzen spun the spare Arrows into the gravel but was able to resume after the car was returned to the circuit.

What happened in the 2002 German Grand Prix?

Michael Schumacher led Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello away. Juan Pablo Montoya fought Kimi Räikkönen through several corners before completing a forceful pass, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen’s stalled Arrows needed assistance in the pits. The leading Ferrari managed tyre blistering without surrendering control of the race.

Rubens Barrichello lost time when his fuel flap would not open at a stop. Kimi Räikkönen’s puncture damaged his car and ultimately contributed to a brake failure that ended his race. Ralf Schumacher later needed an additional stop to restore pressure in the engine’s pneumatic system, handing second to Juan Pablo Montoya.

Michael Schumacher won ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher, with Rubens Barrichello fourth. David Coulthard and Nick Heidfeld completed the points. Both Arrows retired, bringing an uncelebrated end to the team’s final race appearance.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 106 points, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya on 40. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 141, with Williams on 76.
