Championship background

Race entries

Alex Yoong returned to Minardi after Anthony Davidson’s two-race spell, rejoining Mark Webber. Arrows remained absent, leaving ten teams and 20 drivers for the final European round of the season.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher led the first Friday session as damp patches from overnight rain gradually disappeared. Eddie Irvine twice visited the gravel without a major impact. Rubens Barrichello lost time with a soft brake pedal that required attention before he could continue.

Michael Schumacher improved in the afternoon, but David Coulthard crashed after putting a wheel onto the grass. Alex Yoong also hit the tyre wall after spinning at Ascari. Allan McNish’s Toyota became stuck in first gear near the pit exit, requiring a major rear-end change.

Juan Pablo Montoya set the fastest morning lap in the final practice, demonstrating Williams’ speed on Monza’s long straights. Jenson Button’s session ended in the gravel after a high-speed spin at Parabolica. The leading teams then prepared for a closely contested qualifying hour.

Qualifying

Juan Pablo Montoya claimed pole with a lap averaging 259.827 km/h, surpassing the long-standing qualifying-speed record. Michael Schumacher was second, followed by Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Williams’ straight-line performance made it a serious threat despite Ferrari’s recent race dominance.

Kimi Räikkönen and Takuma Sato collided at the second chicane, stopping the session. The stewards deleted Kimi Räikkönen’s fastest time, dropping him to sixth and promoting Eddie Irvine to fifth. Both Jaguars qualified in the top eight, offering the team a strong opportunity on Sunday.

Rubens Barrichello slowed near the finish for a close Ferrari one-two, with Michael Schumacher second. Eddie Irvine secured third for Jaguar. Jarno Trulli recovered from a back-of-grid start to fourth ahead of Jenson Button, and Olivier Panis collected the final point.
