Michael Schumacher controlled the Spanish Grand Prix from start to finish, taking victory ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and David Coulthard. Ferrari’s afternoon was not entirely straightforward, however, as Rubens Barrichello failed to start and repeated wing failures forced Minardi to withdraw both cars.

Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 5 leading the 2002 F1 World Championship on 34 points, with Ralf Schumacher on 20. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 40 points.

Race entries

The usual 22 drivers entered the weekend, but Minardi withdrew Mark Webber and Alex Yoong on safety grounds after three wing failures across practice, qualifying and warm-up. Rubens Barrichello’s subsequent failure to start left only 19 cars contesting the race.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher narrowly led Rubens Barrichello in Friday’s first session, with Ferrari looking comfortable through the circuit’s fast corners. Takuma Sato stopped near the pit exit with an electrical connection problem before setting a time. The restriction on spare cars in practice prevented him from resuming in another Jordan.

Michael Schumacher remained fastest in the afternoon, although Heinz-Harald Frentzen brought the Arrows within a tenth of the Ferrari. Schumacher ran wide but continued, and Jarno Trulli recovered from a slide into the gravel without striking the barriers. Both incidents underlined how quickly a promising lap could unravel.

Rubens Barrichello led the first Saturday session, but Mark Webber’s front-wing failure caused a stoppage. The wing broke away on the main straight after the Minardi hit a bump, scattering debris while Mark Webber kept control and returned to the pits. Minardi changed its wing arrangement for the following session.

Rubens Barrichello’s earlier time remained the morning benchmark as Nick Heidfeld moved into second in the combined order. Takuma Sato spun through the gravel and damaged his nose against the tyre barrier, while Juan Pablo Montoya recovered from a slide under braking. The teams then turned to qualifying, with Minardi still assessing its wing problem.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher took pole with a late improvement, beating Rubens Barrichello as Ferrari locked out the front row again. Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya qualified third and fourth; Juan Pablo Montoya used the spare Williams after detecting an engine misfire.

Eddie Irvine’s qualifying times were deleted because his fuel sample did not match the approved specification, sending him to the back. Alex Yoong’s detached front wing also interrupted the session. Heinz-Harald Frentzen qualified tenth, continuing Arrows’ encouraging weekend pace.

Eddie Irvine was dropped to the rear of the grid after a fuel analysis revealed that the fuel was not the same as that approved for use two weeks before the Grand Prix.

Sunday warm-up

Rubens Barrichello set the pace in the Sunday warm-up, but Michael Schumacher stopped with a hydraulic failure. More seriously, Mark Webber lost his rear wing on the main straight and spun into the gravel under braking. Combined with Alex Yoong’s qualifying wing failure, this prompted Minardi to withdraw rather than race without establishing the cause.

What happened in the 2002 Spanish Grand Prix?

Rubens Barrichello could not select a gear for the formation lap and failed to start. Michael Schumacher, using the spare Ferrari after his warm-up problem, led away and steadily pulled clear. Kimi Räikkönen retired when the McLaren’s rear wing failed early in the race.

Ralf Schumacher damaged his car after running off and dropped out of podium contention. Juan Pablo Montoya held second despite a confused pit-stop release that knocked crew members over. David Coulthard passed Jenson Button, whose Renault developed handling and hydraulic trouble, to move into third.

Michael Schumacher completed a Grand Slam, adding the fastest lap to pole and an unbroken race lead. Juan Pablo Montoya and David Coulthard joined him on the podium, while late Renault problems helped Nick Heidfeld and Felipe Massa finish fourth and fifth. Heinz-Harald Frentzen took sixth to score Arrows’ first point of the season.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 44 points, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya on 23. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 50, with Williams on 43.
