Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 4 leading the 2002 F1 World Championship on 24 points, with Ralf Schumacher on 16. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 30 points.

Race entries

All eleven teams retained their driver pairings for the first European round. Ferrari now had the F2002 available for both drivers, allowing Rubens Barrichello to join Michael Schumacher in the new car after using the older model in Brazil.

Free Practice

Heavy rain made Friday’s opening session a test of control rather than outright pace. Michael Schumacher led Giancarlo Fisichella as drivers repeatedly aquaplaned onto the grass and gravel. The possibility of further rain made the wet running useful, although the conditions offered little margin for error.

The rain eased for the afternoon but standing water remained. Michael Schumacher again headed the times, while Jarno Trulli damaged his front suspension and wing at Variante Bassa. Schumacher also stopped after losing the rear of the Ferrari over a kerb while passing an Arrows.

Saturday began with a damp circuit that dried slowly in the cool conditions. Juan Pablo Montoya narrowly beat Ralf Schumacher as the surface improved towards the end of the first session. Drivers initially used intermediates, with the late change in grip making the timing of each run important.

The dry line broadened during the final session and lap times fell sharply. Michael Schumacher went fastest near the finish, ahead of David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello. Slippery patches still caught drivers out, but the improving conditions finally gave the teams useful preparation for dry qualifying.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher snatched pole in the closing seconds, beating Rubens Barrichello by just 0.064 seconds. Rain had been forecast but stayed away. Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya filled the second row, setting up another Ferrari–Williams contest.

David Coulthard recovered from an engine change to qualify fifth. Alex Yoong failed to meet the 107 per cent requirement and was not granted an exemption, reducing the race field to 21. Mark Webber qualified the other Minardi despite needing the spare car after an engine problem.

What happened in the 2002 San Marino Grand Prix?

Michael Schumacher led away while Ralf Schumacher passed Rubens Barrichello for second. The leading Ferrari quickly built an advantage, leaving Rubens Barrichello to pursue the Williams. Further back, early mechanical problems removed Allan McNish and Takuma Sato, while Nick Heidfeld’s race was disrupted by an unscheduled stop and refuelling trouble.

Rubens Barrichello stayed out an extra lap at the first round of stops and emerged ahead of Ralf Schumacher. Ferrari then controlled the race, despite a slower second stop for Rubens Barrichello caused by a wheel-nut problem. Kimi Räikkönen retired after an exhaust issue threatened the McLaren’s suspension.

Michael Schumacher secured his third win in four races, with Rubens Barrichello completing Ferrari’s one-two. Ralf Schumacher finished third ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya, Jenson Button and David Coulthard. After three consecutive retirements, Rubens Barrichello’s first finish of the season brought a substantial reward.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 34 points, followed by Ralf Schumacher on 20. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 40, with Williams on 37.
