David Coulthard gave McLaren its first victory of the season with a superbly controlled Monaco Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher followed him closely to the finish, but the Scot never surrendered the lead after beating pole-sitter Juan Pablo Montoya away from the grid.

Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 7 leading the 2002 F1 World Championship on 54 points, with Juan Pablo Montoya on 27. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 66 points.
Race entries
Takuma Sato returned after his heavy Austrian accident, keeping Jordan’s regular pairing intact. The other ten teams also retained their drivers for the distinctive Monaco schedule, with opening practice on Thursday and no Formula 1 running on Friday.
Free Practice
Michael Schumacher led the first Thursday session as a damp track gradually dried. The barriers quickly punished mistakes: Pedro de la Rosa damaged his Jaguar at the Swimming Pool, and Kimi Räikkönen backed into the wall at Rascasse. The McLaren’s monocoque was too badly damaged to repair.
Jarno Trulli led the afternoon session ahead of Allan McNish, but there was considerable damage elsewhere. Alex Yoong’s crash stopped the running, Enrique Bernoldi’s engine spread oil and Eddie Irvine hit the wall after encountering it. Felipe Massa and Jenson Button also struck barriers, leaving several garages facing substantial repairs.

Rubens Barrichello narrowly led Michael Schumacher in the first Saturday session as warmer, sunnier weather improved conditions. Allan McNish and Mark Webber used the Sainte Dévote escape road, but the field avoided the costly barrier impacts that had characterised Thursday’s running.
Jarno Trulli returned to the top in the final practice, narrowly ahead of David Coulthard. Takuma Sato and Kimi Räikkönen both crashed at Sainte Dévote, while a suspension failure sent Eddie Irvine into the barriers at the Swimming Pool. Mark Webber also damaged his Minardi in that area, making the final build-up to qualifying a busy one for the mechanics.

Qualifying
Juan Pablo Montoya found a clear final run to take pole ahead of David Coulthard. Michael Schumacher qualified third after an eye irritation and an aborted run complicated his session. Ralf Schumacher was fourth, followed by Rubens Barrichello and Kimi Räikkönen.
Traffic was a persistent obstacle around the narrow circuit. Both Toyotas reached the top ten, while Alex Yoong recovered from an early crash to qualify in the spare Minardi. Several drivers had already needed rebuilt or replacement cars after practice damage.

What happened in the 2002 Monaco Grand Prix?
David Coulthard made the better start and took the lead from Juan Pablo Montoya into Sainte Dévote. The leading cars remained closely grouped, but Monaco offered few passing opportunities. Jenson Button received a penalty for jumping the start, and Takuma Sato crashed in the tunnel while allowing Giancarlo Fisichella through.
Smoke from David Coulthard’s McLaren caused concern, but the team corrected an oil-system problem and he continued. Juan Pablo Montoya later retired with engine failure. Rubens Barrichello hit Kimi Räikkönen at the chicane, ending the McLaren’s race and earning penalties, while Michael Schumacher increased the pressure on the leader through the stops.
David Coulthard emerged from his stop still ahead and resisted Schumacher to win after leading every lap. Ralf Schumacher finished third despite an additional tyre stop. Jarno Trulli, Giancarlo Fisichella and Heinz-Harald Frentzen completed the points, with the Arrows driver overcoming refuelling trouble to hold off Rubens Barrichello.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 60 points, followed by Ralf Schumacher on 27. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 72, with Williams on 54.
