Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 9 leading the 2002 F1 World Championship on 70 points, with Ralf Schumacher on 27. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 86 points.

The Nürburgring’s new opening stadium section changed the character of the lap and created fresh overtaking opportunities. Ferrari arrived with a large championship advantage, but Williams continued to threaten over a single qualifying lap.

Race entries

The eleven teams retained their regular drivers. The revised circuit gave everyone new corners to learn, with the opening complex likely to shape both the start and the battles through the race.

Free Practice

Rubens Barrichello narrowly led Michael Schumacher in Friday’s first session. Several drivers ran wide at the new first-corner hairpin while adjusting their braking points. Enrique Bernoldi spun at the Ford Kurve and lightly hit the barrier, ending his running and requiring marshals to remove the Arrows.

David Coulthard went fastest in the afternoon despite visiting the Dunlop gravel trap. Many drivers ran off, with Mark Webber’s excursion caused by a rear-suspension failure. Alex Yoong’s engine also failed, giving Minardi a difficult session while the leading teams explored the new layout.

Michael Schumacher headed the first Saturday session despite an early spin after clipping a kerb at the final chicane. Felipe Massa ran wide in the stadium section and Jacques Villeneuve spun at the Bit-Kehre. The teams balanced qualifying preparation with the need to understand the altered circuit in race trim.

Michael Schumacher’s earlier lap remained the morning benchmark. De la Pedro de la Rosa stopped with a hydraulic leak and fire in the Jaguar, while Jenson Button escaped from the gravel at Dunlop. Alex Yoong also ran over the final chicane’s kerbs, but brought the Minardi back to the pits.

Qualifying

Juan Pablo Montoya secured his third consecutive pole by just 0.009 seconds from Ralf Schumacher. Williams locked out the front row, while Michael Schumacher qualified third after a gearbox problem forced him into the spare Ferrari.

Rubens Barrichello took fourth ahead of the two McLarens, with the Renaults on the next row. The tiny margin at the front underlined Williams’ qualifying strength, but Ferrari’s practice pace suggested that the race could be a different contest.

What happened in the 2002 European Grand Prix?

Ralf Schumacher initially moved ahead, but Rubens Barrichello surged through to lead by the end of the opening lap. Michael Schumacher soon passed both Williams drivers to make it a Ferrari one-two. The lightly fuelled Ferraris pulled clear, while the Jordan drivers needed repairs after first-corner contact.

Michael Schumacher spun while following Rubens Barrichello but retained second. Further back, Juan Pablo Montoya lost control as David Coulthard challenged into the first corner and the two collided, ending both races. Kimi Räikkönen benefited and used his strategy to move ahead of Ralf Schumacher.

Rubens Barrichello remained in front through the final stops, and Ferrari instructed its drivers to preserve their positions. He took his second career victory ahead of Michael Schumacher, with Kimi Räikkönen third. Ralf Schumacher, Jenson Button and Felipe Massa completed the points.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 76 points, followed by Ralf Schumacher on 30. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 102, with Williams on 57.
