Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 13 leading the 2002 F1 World Championship on 106 points, with Juan Pablo Montoya on 40. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 141 points.

Race entries

Arrows was absent amid its financial crisis, reducing the field to 20 cars. Anthony Davidson made his Formula 1 debut for Minardi in place of Alex Yoong, joining Mark Webber while the Malaysian driver stepped aside for two races.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher led the first Friday session on a slippery Hungaroring. Felipe Massa became stuck in the gravel near the end, while Anthony Davidson’s first Grand Prix practice was interrupted when a driveshaft failure locked his rear wheels and sent him spinning. Light rain did not significantly wet the racing surface.

Michael Schumacher improved in the afternoon, but the low grip produced several incidents. David Coulthard damaged a tyre over a kerb and briefly overheated his engine, while both Saubers struck barriers. Juan Pablo Montoya became stranded in the gravel late in the session, ending a difficult day for several leading drivers.

Overnight rain washed away the rubber, so teams waited for grip to improve in the first Saturday session. Michael Schumacher again set the pace. Jenson Button hit the tyre barrier with the right-front corner near the end after losing the rear of his Renault.

The final practice was cleaner as conditions stabilised. Michael Schumacher marginally improved his earlier time, while Kimi Räikkönen and Juan Pablo Montoya moved closer behind the Ferraris. Giancarlo Fisichella ran through the gravel near Turn 2 but avoided hitting the outside wall and continued.

What happened in the 2002 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Rubens Barrichello retained the lead, while Michael Schumacher resisted Ralf Schumacher to keep second. Juan Pablo Montoya lost places at the start and damaged his Williams in contact with Jenson Button. The Ferraris quickly pulled away, leaving the rest of the field to contest the remaining points.

Kimi Räikkönen passed Juan Pablo Montoya in an extended battle, and the Williams needed an extra stop for damaged bodywork. Jenson Button later spun out, while McLaren’s long stints helped both drivers gain positions through the stops. Anthony Davidson’s debut ended in the gravel after he ran onto the dusty part of the track while being lapped.

Rubens Barrichello won ahead of Michael Schumacher and Ralf Schumacher. Kimi Räikkönen and David Coulthard recovered to fourth and fifth, with Giancarlo Fisichella scoring the final point. Ferrari’s one-two put the constructors’ title beyond Williams’ reach with four races remaining.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 112 points, followed by Rubens Barrichello on 45. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 157, with Williams on 80.
