Fernando Alonso led home Lewis Hamilton in an emphatic McLaren one-two at the Monaco Grand Prix. The pair left all but Felipe Massa a lap behind around the Circuit de Monaco, although the management of their battle attracted as much attention as their speed.

Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 5 leading the 2007 F1 World Championship on 30 points, with Fernando Alonso on 28. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 58 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Thursday morning immediately showed McLaren’s strength, but Lewis Hamilton lost valuable running when the external starter shaft broke and debris had to be removed from the gearbox area. Fernando Alonso completed more than twice his team-mate’s lap count. The barriers also claimed victims: Giancarlo Fisichella damaged his Renault at Sainte Devote, Mark Webber broke a wheel rim there and Christijan Albers crashed at Tabac.

Fernando Alonso stayed quickest on Thursday afternoon as Lewis Hamilton’s first substantial mistake of the season ended in the Sainte Devote tyres. Anthony Davidson also hit the wall there, while Adrian Sutil’s incident prompted a red flag and Ralf Schumacher crashed at the Swimming Pool late on. Kimi Räikkönen split the McLarens on the timesheet, but Lewis Hamilton’s lost track time was an important part of the day’s story.

Rain transformed Saturday practice and gave Adrian Sutil an unexpected moment at the top for Spyker. As a dry line began to emerge, the timing of each lap and the traffic became crucial. Spins and excursions were plentiful, including several for Lewis Hamilton and Ralf Schumacher, yet the field largely avoided serious barrier damage. Kimi Räikkönen and Lewis Hamilton followed Adrian Sutil in an order that reflected the changing conditions.

Qualifying

Fernando Alonso took pole ahead of Lewis Hamilton, securing the position that matters so much on Monaco’s narrow streets. Lewis Hamilton had been quickest in Q1 but encountered Mark Webber on his final challenge. Felipe Massa qualified third, with Giancarlo Fisichella delivering an excellent fourth for Renault and Nico Rosberg fifth for Williams.

Kimi Räikkönen struck the barrier near the Swimming Pool in Q2, breaking his front-right suspension and leaving himself sixteenth. David Coulthard was excluded from the final shootout for impeding Heikki Kovalainen, allowing Jenson Button into Q3. The combination of Ferrari’s setback and McLaren’s front-row lockout gave Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton a powerful advantage.

Christijan Albers failed to set a time in Q1 due to a hydraulic problem.

Kimi Räikkönen failed to set a time in Q2 driving out of the pool complex into a guardrail, breaking his right front suspension.

David Coulthard was penalised for blocking Heikki Kovalainen and not allowed to take part in Q3 despite posting the 8th fastest time of Q2, he was then given a two place grid penalty and started the race in 13th place. Jenson Button, who had qualified 11th in Q2, therefore inherited the final place in Q3 from Coulthard.

What happened in the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix?

Fernando Alonso retained the lead at the start, with Lewis Hamilton slotting in behind to keep Felipe Massa at bay. McLaren’s pace then separated the leaders from the rest, leaving the two team-mates to manage traffic and their pit stops rather than fend off an outside challenge. Felipe Massa was ultimately the only other driver to finish on the lead lap.

Lewis Hamilton followed Fernando Alonso home, while McLaren’s instructions to protect the result prompted an FIA investigation into possible team orders. The governing body subsequently cleared the team. Behind Felipe Massa, Giancarlo Fisichella converted his strong grid position into fourth, ahead of the BMW Saubers of Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld.

Alexander Wurz took seventh and Kimi Räikkönen salvaged the final point after starting deep in the field. Mark Webber retired with gearbox trouble, while both Spykers and Vitantonio Liuzzi also failed to finish. Fernando Alonso’s victory brought him level with Lewis Hamilton on points, with McLaren firmly in control of the constructors’ contest.

After the race, Fernando Alonso headed the drivers’ standings with 38 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 38. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 76, with Ferrari on 56.
