Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 13 leading the 2004 F1 World Championship on 110 points, with Rubens Barrichello on 74. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 184 points.

Race entries

Ricardo Zonta replaced da Cristiano da Matta in Toyota’s race line-up, with Ryan Briscoe taking over the third car on Friday. Antonio Pizzonia continued at Williams in place of Ralf Schumacher. Zsolt Baumgartner returned to his home Grand Prix a year after making his Formula 1 debut there.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello led the opening session, while Mark Webber failed to set a time because of technical trouble. Briscoe began his Friday role with Toyota and Ricardo Zonta adjusted to the demands of a race weekend rather than a testing-only assignment. Conditions were cooler than the teams often encountered at the Hungaroring, adding importance to tyre choice.

Kimi Räikkönen went fastest in the afternoon, narrowly ahead of Michael Schumacher. Gianmaria Bruni’s spin restricted him to four laps, and Rubens Barrichello’s new-tyre evaluation was compromised by traffic and a flat spot. Ferrari still gathered useful long-run data, while McLaren’s quick time did not yet reveal the difficulties its tyre choice would bring in cooler conditions.

Michael Schumacher returned to the top on Saturday morning, with Antonio Pizzonia and Juan Pablo Montoya close behind. Williams’s substitute driver continued to show promising speed. The teams worked towards qualifying on a circuit where gaining places in the race was difficult, and Toyota sought to preserve the encouraging balance it had found during practice.

Jenson Button headed the two Ferraris in the final session, while both Toyotas showed top-ten potential. Olivier Panis and Ricardo Zonta were more comfortable at this stage than they would be when conditions changed for qualifying. Felipe Massa’s Saturday preparations were disrupted by an engine problem, forcing a replacement and a grid penalty before the decisive session.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher claimed pole with Rubens Barrichello alongside. Takuma Sato and Jenson Button filled the second row, more than half a second behind the fastest Ferrari, while Fernando Alonso took fifth. Antonio Pizzonia outqualified Juan Pablo Montoya in the other Williams to complete an encouraging Saturday.

Ricardo Zonta faced the single-lap qualifying format for the first time and finished close to Olivier Panis, although both Toyotas lost grip compared with practice. Felipe Massa did not complete a decisive lap after his engine change. McLaren also struggled as its tyre selection proved poorly suited to the cooler conditions.

Multiple engine issues during practice, Sauber decided to save the Petronas engine and abort Massa’s effort in the second qualifying session.

Felipe Massa received a 10-place grid penalty for an engine change.

What happened in the 2004 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Michael Schumacher led away and Rubens Barrichello resisted Fernando Alonso, who jumped past the slow-starting BARs. Ricardo Zonta’s Toyota debut began with contact and a spin, dropping him to the back. The Ferraris quickly established control on a circuit that offered few opportunities for the chasing cars to change the order.

Kimi Räikkönen retired with mechanical trouble, and Jarno Trulli later lost his Renault to an engine failure. Jenson Button pursued Juan Pablo Montoya without getting close enough to attack, while Antonio Pizzonia and Takuma Sato fought over the next places. At the front, Schumacher maintained an unbroken lead and Rubens Barrichello completed the team’s comfortable afternoon.

Michael Schumacher won from Rubens Barrichello and Fernando Alonso, with Juan Pablo Montoya, Jenson Button, Antonio Pizzonia, Takuma Sato and Giancarlo Fisichella taking the remaining points. Ferrari’s one-two secured the constructors’ crown. Schumacher also moved within touching distance of his seventh drivers’ title, with only his team-mate still mathematically able to stop him.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 120 points, followed by Rubens Barrichello on 82. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 202, with Renault on 91.
