Michael Schumacher used a two-stop strategy to win the Canadian Grand Prix from sixth on the grid. Ralf Schumacher finished second on the road, but post-race exclusions for Williams and Toyota turned the result into a Ferrari one-two and gave Timo Glock points on his debut.

Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 8 leading the 2004 F1 World Championship on 60 points, with Rubens Barrichello on 46. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 106 points.

Race entries

Timo Glock stepped up from Jordan’s Friday role to replace Giorgio Pantano for the race weekend’s decisive sessions. The change gave the young German his Grand Prix debut alongside Nick Heidfeld, while the other nine teams retained their regular race pairings.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher led Rubens Barrichello in the opening session as Ferrari introduced a new engine specification. Circuit Gilles Jacques Villeneuve placed a premium on braking stability and traction, and the teams began work on brake cooling as well as tyre choice. Williams had a difficult start: Ralf Schumacher was unhappy with the brakes and struggled to find a suitable balance.

Takuma Sato set the afternoon’s quickest lap, while Michael Schumacher brushed a wall and had to abandon a run. The damage was limited, allowing Ferrari to complete useful heavy-fuel brake tests. Williams’s problems continued, with Juan Pablo Montoya managing little running. Toyota looked more competitive, but the varying programmes made it too early to judge the likely race order.

Michael Schumacher headed Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button when Saturday practice began. The leading three were closely matched as the drivers prepared for the single-lap sessions. Toyota concentrated on making its car consistent for the race, accepting a balance that would protect the rear tyres even if it brought more understeer over a qualifying lap.

Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso moved Renault to the front in final practice, followed by the two BARs. Several minor excursions showed the drivers testing their braking limits around the walls and chicanes. Toyota could not repeat its Friday positions, and the changing order left qualifying looking considerably more open than Ferrari’s early pace had suggested.

Qualifying

Ralf Schumacher took Williams’s first pole of the year, beating Jenson Button by just 0.066 seconds. Jarno Trulli qualified third, with Juan Pablo Montoya fourth and Fernando Alonso fifth. Michael Schumacher was only sixth, leaving Ferrari to seek an advantage through its race strategy.

Takuma Sato’s qualifying went wrong and he would start from the pit lane. Timo Glock completed his first Grand Prix qualifying appearance, while the two Toyotas lined up together in the midfield after concentrating on race consistency rather than maximum one-lap speed.

Felipe Massa did not set a time in the second section after suffering a puncture and abandoning the attempt.

Gianmaria Bruni did not set a time in the first section after spinning and abandoned the attempt.

Gianmaria Bruni did not set a time in Q2 after his engine broke down and the car was set up for his teammate, so he returned straight to the pits and did not set a time.

What happened in the 2004 Canadian Grand Prix?

Ralf Schumacher led at the start, but Jarno Trulli retired almost immediately with suspension trouble. A midfield collision disrupted the Jaguars and David Coulthard, while Timo Glock picked his way through to gain places. Fernando Alonso’s strong opening was undone by a slow refuelling stop and later a driveshaft failure.

Ferrari’s two-stop approach brought Michael Schumacher ahead of the three-stopping leaders. Rubens Barrichello also ran strongly, while Kimi Räikkönen endured extra stops and a penalty. Felipe Massa suffered a heavy late accident after a suspension failure, escaping serious injury. Michael Schumacher reached the flag ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello.

Both Williams cars and both Toyotas were excluded after scrutineering found their brake ducts did not comply with the regulations. Rubens Barrichello therefore became second and Jenson Button third, followed by Giancarlo Fisichella, Kimi Räikkönen and David Coulthard. Timo Glock was promoted to seventh on debut, with Nick Heidfeld eighth, giving Jordan a double-points finish.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 70 points, followed by Rubens Barrichello on 54. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 124, with Renault on 61.
