Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 9 leading the 2007 F1 World Championship on 64 points, with Fernando Alonso on 50. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 114 points.

Race entries

The race line-ups remained unchanged, but Christian Klien replaced Jenson Button in Friday afternoon practice while Jenson Button rested a sore back. Jenson Button returned on Saturday. Red Bull also raced with a special photographic livery supporting the Wings for Life charity.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton gave the home crowd an early lift by leading Friday morning, but blustery conditions and a slippery surface caught several drivers out. Both McLaren drivers spun, as did other runners, without major damage. Nico Rosberg led the midfield challenge for Williams, while Jenson Button’s back discomfort prompted him to sit out the afternoon session.

Kimi Räikkönen and Felipe Massa put Ferrari first and second in the afternoon, with Toyota also showing the speed it had demonstrated in testing. Klien took over Jenson Button’s Honda to keep the team’s programme moving. Copse repeatedly tempted drivers beyond the track limits, and Adrian Sutil spun into the tyres there, escaping injury and major car damage. Both Super Aguris finished ahead of the works Hondas.

Kimi Räikkönen remained fastest on Saturday, with Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa close behind. Lewis Hamilton’s low-fuel attempt was interrupted by yellow flags after Alexander Wurz went off, leaving his final position less representative of his potential. BMW Sauber continued to search for pace, while Anthony Davidson again made the top ten in practice before a much more difficult qualifying session.

Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton snatched pole with a late lap that sent the Silverstone crowd into celebration. Kimi Räikkönen, despite a mistake at the final corner, beat Fernando Alonso to second, with Felipe Massa fourth. Fernando Alonso had led Q1 and Q2, but Lewis Hamilton found the decisive improvement when the grid was settled.

Anthony Davidson spun while warming his tyres late in Q1, bringing out yellow flags that also frustrated Takuma Sato and Jenson Button. Nico Rosberg was eliminated with an engine problem, while both Red Bulls missed Q3. The final ten included both BMW Saubers, both Renaults and both Toyotas alongside the championship’s leading quartet.

What happened in the 2007 British Grand Prix?

Felipe Massa stalled before the start and had to begin from the pit lane after an extra formation lap. Lewis Hamilton led the opening stint, but his earlier first stop allowed Kimi Räikkönen to move ahead. Fernando Alonso then used a shorter refuelling stop to emerge in front of both, setting up a strategic contest with the Ferrari.

Fernando Alonso’s lighter fuel load meant an earlier second stop. Kimi Räikkönen stayed out, used the clear laps available and completed his own final stop with the lead intact. Felipe Massa fought back through the field but could not dislodge Robert Kubica from fourth, while Lewis Hamilton lacked the race pace to stay with the leading pair.

Kimi Räikkönen won ahead of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, whose podium sequence remained intact after nine starts. Robert Kubica, Felipe Massa, Nick Heidfeld, Heikki Kovalainen and Giancarlo Fisichella completed the points. Ferrari’s second consecutive victory kept the championship battle alive, even though Lewis Hamilton still held a useful lead in the standings.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 70 points, followed by Fernando Alonso on 58. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 128, with Ferrari on 103.
