Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 14 leading the 2007 F1 World Championship on 92 points, with Fernando Alonso on 89. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 166 points.

Before this weekend, McLaren was excluded from the constructors’ championship following the espionage investigation. Ferrari therefore arrived leading BMW Sauber; Hamilton and Alonso retained their drivers’ points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Kimi Räikkönen led Friday morning, but Felipe Massa lost nearly all his running after going off at Rivage early in the session. Vitantonio Liuzzi also stopped beside the track, limiting his preparations. Spa’s revised layout and pit complex were familiar from the summer test, yet the cool, dry conditions still required fresh set-up work before the competitive sessions.

The afternoon remained dry and grip improved as the teams built mileage. Lewis Hamilton headed Fernando Alonso, while Toyota completed a productive programme of aerodynamic, mechanical and tyre work to finish fifth and sixth. Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher ran without significant reliability trouble, giving the team a useful foundation for qualifying on a circuit both drivers enjoyed.

Ferrari restored its one-two on Saturday morning, Kimi Räikkönen ahead of Felipe Massa, but Robert Kubica suffered an engine problem that would bring a ten-place grid penalty. The interruption left him short of running and changed BMW Sauber’s race prospects. Heikki Kovalainen led the midfield on time, while Sakon Yamamoto spun during Spyker’s final preparations.

Qualifying

Kimi Räikkönen took pole ahead of Felipe Massa, putting Ferrari in control of the front row. Fernando Alonso narrowly beat Lewis Hamilton to third, while Robert Kubica qualified fifth before his engine penalty was applied. Nico Rosberg’s strong lap therefore earned him a fifth-place start alongside Nick Heidfeld.

Giancarlo Fisichella also changed his engine and was sent to the back, with the sequence of penalties leaving Robert Kubica fourteenth. Seven teams reached Q3, underlining the close midfield fight. Mark Webber, Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen all secured places in the top-ten shootout, while both Super Aguris and both Spykers were eliminated in Q1.

Robert Kubica dropped ten places for engine change.

Giancarlo Fisichella started at the back of the grid for an engine change after qualifying.

What happened in the 2007 Belgian Grand Prix?

The Ferraris led away, while Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton fought closely through the opening corners. Lewis Hamilton ran wide at La Source as Fernando Alonso held the inside, and the Spaniard retained third. Kimi Räikkönen then established control, with Felipe Massa close enough to cover the McLarens but unable to overturn his team-mate’s advantage through the stops.

Nick Heidfeld moved ahead of Nico Rosberg in the midfield contest, while Robert Kubica worked forward after his grid penalty. Mechanical problems removed Giancarlo Fisichella, Sebastian Vettel, David Coulthard, Alexander Wurz and Jenson Button from the race. Heikki Kovalainen held the final points position ahead of the recovering Robert Kubica.

Kimi Räikkönen secured another Spa victory, with Felipe Massa second and the McLarens third and fourth. Nick Heidfeld, Nico Rosberg, Mark Webber and Heikki Kovalainen completed the points. With McLaren excluded from the constructors’ championship before this weekend following the espionage investigation, Ferrari’s result made its title secure; Fernando Alonso’s advantage over Lewis Hamilton on the road narrowed their separate drivers’ contest to two points.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 97 points, followed by Fernando Alonso on 95. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 161, with BMW Sauber on 90.
