Championship background

Fernando Alonso arrived at round 5 leading the 2005 F1 World Championship on 36 points, with Jarno Trulli on 20. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 46 points.

Race entries

Juan Pablo Montoya returned to McLaren after missing two races with a shoulder injury, with Pedro de la Rosa back on third-car duties. BAR missed the weekend as it began the two-race suspension imposed after Imola, leaving 18 race cars. Vitantonio Liuzzi continued alongside David Coulthard at Red Bull, with Christian Klien driving its extra car on Friday.

Free Practice

De la Pedro de la Rosa set the Friday morning pace as the teams explored Barcelona’s newly resurfaced track. Its smoother asphalt offered little early grip and made tyre warm-up a particular concern. Ricardo Zonta lost much of the session to a hydraulic problem, interrupting Toyota’s tyre comparison, while Jarno Trulli completed only two laps without setting a time.

De la Pedro de la Rosa remained fastest in the afternoon, but Juan Pablo Montoya’s late accident gave McLaren a repair job on the Colombian’s return. Ricardo Zonta recovered his lost running to finish the tyre comparison. Toyota’s aerodynamic updates worked encouragingly, although choosing between its tyre options remained difficult despite the team’s extensive experience at this testing venue.

Giancarlo Fisichella narrowly headed Michael Schumacher in Saturday’s first session. Jarno Trulli managed only three laps, struggling with grip and reporting a small engine problem during the morning. That restricted his preparation with Toyota’s new aerodynamic package, while Ralf Schumacher’s stronger running showed the car had considerably more potential than Jarno Trulli’s position suggested.

Ralf Schumacher put Toyota on top in final practice, with both McLarens close behind. Jarno Trulli completed a fuller programme and improved substantially, though he still lacked the confidence to attack the windy final sector as freely as he wanted. The contrast between the two Toyota drivers made qualifying a test of whether Jarno Trulli could translate the car’s underlying speed into one clean lap.

Qualifying

Jarno Trulli delivered a fine Saturday lap to lead Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen, with just 0.024 seconds covering the three. Ralf Schumacher was close behind in fourth, putting Toyota firmly in contention before Sunday’s race-fuelled session. Nick Heidfeld and Rubens Barrichello faced engine-change grid penalties.

Kimi Räikkönen took aggregate pole on Sunday, with Mark Webber joining him on the front row and Fernando Alonso third. Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli lined up fourth and fifth. The second session had transformed the leading order, and McLaren now had the ideal starting point for its first win of the season.

Rubens Barrichello received a 10-place grid penalty for an engine change.

Nick Heidfeld received a 20-place grid penalty for engine changes.

Tiago Monteiro will start from the back of the grid due to an engine change in parc fermé.

What happened in the 2005 Spanish Grand Prix?

Kimi Räikkönen made an excellent start and immediately began building a lead. Mark Webber lost ground to Fernando Alonso and Ralf Schumacher, while the McLaren’s sustained early speed prevented Fernando Alonso from mounting a serious challenge in front of his home crowd.

Fernando Alonso had to manage his tyres and concentrate on second. Jarno Trulli moved ahead of Ralf Schumacher through the pit-stop sequence, while Mark Webber’s afternoon became a recovery drive after further places slipped away. Michael Schumacher’s tyre problems ended another frustrating race for Ferrari, and Jacques Villeneuve retired with cooling trouble.

Kimi Räikkönen won comfortably from Fernando Alonso, with Jarno Trulli completing the podium ahead of Ralf Schumacher. Giancarlo Fisichella recovered to fifth, followed by Mark Webber, Juan Pablo Montoya and David Coulthard. Fernando Alonso still banked valuable championship points, but McLaren had demonstrated the pace to challenge Renault over a full Grand Prix.

After the race, Fernando Alonso headed the drivers’ standings with 44 points, followed by Jarno Trulli on 26. Renault led the constructors’ table on 58, with Toyota on 40.
