Kimi Räikkönen won the first Turkish Grand Prix, but a late mistake cost McLaren a one-two. Fernando Alonso seized second from Juan Pablo Montoya to limit the damage to his championship lead on Formula 1’s first visit to Istanbul Park.

Championship background
Fernando Alonso arrived at round 14 leading the 2005 F1 World Championship on 87 points, with Kimi Räikkönen on 61. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 117 points.
Race entries
The regular race field was unchanged for the inaugural Turkish Grand Prix. Toccacelo joined Minardi’s Friday programme, while Pedro de la Rosa drove McLaren’s extra car and Ricardo Zonta continued at Toyota. Every team faced the task of learning Istanbul Park’s elevation changes and demanding long corners.
Free Practice
De la Pedro de la Rosa set the first F1 practice benchmark at Istanbul Park as drivers learned the new layout. Rubens Barrichello spun, while Toyota explored the compromise between the slow sections and straight-line speed. The long Turn 8 immediately stood out as a challenge, and Jarno Trulli struggled to bring his tyres into their working range.
Ricardo Zonta led the afternoon after finally finding a clear lap through traffic and yellow flags. His time came without a brand-new set of tyres, encouraging Toyota, though graining and changing grip still complicated its analysis. Jarno Trulli improved his long-run balance after a tyre change, while the team collected data it could not draw from previous races at this new venue.
Juan Pablo Montoya led Saturday’s opening session, with Jenson Button close behind. Toyota again struggled to make its tyres work in the cooler conditions, and Jarno Trulli remained unhappy with the balance. The team’s revised floor and rear wing offered potential, but the morning showed that translating Friday’s pace into race-driver performance would require more work.
Kimi Räikkönen moved ahead in final practice while Jenson Button remained a serious challenger. Jarno Trulli completed a fuller run but still lacked confidence, prompting Toyota to change his set-up substantially before qualifying. It was an unusually uncertain preparation for a single-lap session: he would have to commit without knowing exactly how the revised car would behave.

Qualifying
Kimi Räikkönen secured pole ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and Fernando Alonso, with Juan Pablo Montoya fourth and Jarno Trulli fifth. The new circuit punished mistakes, and several drivers lost time running wide. Jarno Trulli’s set-up gamble produced a strong lap despite the wind making the car more nervous.
Both BAR drivers had troublesome sessions, and Takuma Sato was penalised for impeding Mark Webber. Michael Schumacher also failed to complete a competitive lap. The leading order left McLaren well placed, but the two Renaults stood between its drivers at the front.

Robert Doornbos failed to set a time after his Minardi‘s brakes caught fire due to an incorrect brake pipe fitting.
Takuma Sato, Narain Karthikeyan and Michael Schumacher received a ten-place start penalty due to an engine change.
Jacques Villeneuve spun in turn 8, so he could not complete his fast lap.
Michael Schumacher spun in turn 9, so he could not complete his fast lap.
What happened in the 2005 Turkish Grand Prix?
Giancarlo Fisichella briefly challenged Kimi Räikkönen at the start, but the McLaren reclaimed control and began building a lead. Felipe Massa damaged his Sauber in first-corner contact, while Michael Schumacher and Mark Webber later collided. Both Williams drivers eventually retired after right-rear tyre failures.
McLaren appeared set for a one-two until Juan Pablo Montoya collided with Tiago Monteiro while lapping the Jordan near the finish. Damage to the diffuser compromised the McLaren, and Juan Pablo Montoya subsequently ran wide at Turn 8. Fernando Alonso seized the opening to take second.
Kimi Räikkönen won from Fernando Alonso and Juan Pablo Montoya, with Giancarlo Fisichella fourth. Jenson Button recovered to fifth ahead of Jarno Trulli, David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher. The late reversal meant Kimi Räikkönen gained only two points on Fernando Alonso, despite McLaren having looked capable of a much larger championship swing.
After the race, Fernando Alonso headed the drivers’ standings with 95 points, followed by Kimi Räikkönen on 71. Renault led the constructors’ table on 130, with McLaren on 121.
