Championship background

Fernando Alonso arrived at round 12 leading the 2005 F1 World Championship on 77 points, with Kimi Räikkönen on 51. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 102 points.

Race entries

Robert Doornbos made his race debut for Minardi, replacing Patrick Friesacher alongside Christijan Albers. Kiesa took over Jordan’s Friday car, while Alexander Wurz handled McLaren’s extra running. Toyota introduced an updated engine for both race drivers as the championship returned to Hockenheim.

Free Practice

Alexander Wurz led Friday morning in cool, cloudy conditions. The possibility of afternoon rain prompted Toyota to bring more of Ricardo Zonta’s tyre programme forward, including longer runs than it would normally attempt at that stage. Renault’s race drivers did not set times, while Toyota began checking its updated engine without serious problems.

Alexander Wurz remained fastest in the afternoon, with Kimi Räikkönen clearly ahead of the other race drivers. David Coulthard spun into the gravel and lost valuable running. The rain held off long enough for Ricardo Zonta to complete his planned long runs, though traffic spoiled his final-sector effort on fresh tyres; Toyota still had to consider the uncertain weather when making its tyre choice.

Kimi Räikkönen narrowly headed Juan Pablo Montoya in Saturday’s first session as McLaren’s speed continued. Fernando Alonso, Rubens Barrichello and Narain Karthikeyan all had excursions through the gravel, while David Coulthard recovered some of the running lost on Friday. Ferrari remained well away from the leading pace, giving its home favourite Michael Schumacher little reason for optimism.

McLaren again occupied the first two places in final practice, with Kimi Räikkönen extending his advantage over Juan Pablo Montoya. Toyota completed longer programmes but still lacked the pace to challenge at the front; Jarno Trulli’s braking confidence was also a concern heading into qualifying. The team focused on a race strategy that might recover positions rather than trying to match McLaren’s outright speed.

Qualifying

Kimi Räikkönen secured pole ahead of Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso, finally avoiding the engine penalties that had compromised his previous two weekends. Giancarlo Fisichella took fourth and Michael Schumacher fifth. McLaren’s speed appeared to offer Kimi Räikkönen an excellent chance to reduce the championship deficit.

Juan Pablo Montoya’s lap ended with a spin at the final corner, leaving him without a time and at the back of the grid. It was a costly contrast to his Silverstone victory and denied McLaren a second car near the front. His race would depend on making rapid progress through the midfield.

Juan Pablo Montoya received a 10-place grid penalty for an engine change.

What happened in the 2005 German Grand Prix?

Kimi Räikkönen led away and built a comfortable advantage, while Juan Pablo Montoya made spectacular early progress from the back. Fernando Alonso stayed in contention behind the leading McLaren. The race changed decisively when Kimi Räikkönen’s hydraulics failed on lap 35, handing Fernando Alonso a clear route to victory.

Juan Pablo Montoya continued his recovery and used the pit-stop sequence to secure second ahead of Jenson Button. Michael Schumacher’s tyres faded, allowing Jenson Button through earlier in the race and Giancarlo Fisichella to take fourth near the finish. Jacques Villeneuve endured a scrappy afternoon involving several contacts in the midfield.

Fernando Alonso won from Juan Pablo Montoya and Jenson Button, with Giancarlo Fisichella fourth and Michael Schumacher fifth. Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard and Felipe Massa completed the points. Kimi Räikkönen’s retirement turned another promising McLaren weekend into a major championship setback, leaving Fernando Alonso 36 points ahead.

After the race, Fernando Alonso headed the drivers’ standings with 87 points, followed by Kimi Räikkönen on 51. Renault led the constructors’ table on 117, with McLaren on 95.
