Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 8 leading the 2001 F1 World Championship on 52 points, with David Coulthard on 40. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 76 points.

Race entries

Heinz-Harald Frentzen withdrew after Friday practice with headaches and double vision following accidents in Monaco and Montreal. Jordan reserve Ricardo Zonta took over for the remainder of the weekend. The other teams retained their regular pairings.

Free Practice

David Coulthard led Friday’s opening practice, but Jacques Villeneuve‘s heavy accident drew the attention at his home circuit. A suspension failure sent the BAR into the barriers, destroying the car and ending his session. An earlier on-track disagreement with Juan Pablo Montoya also became a contentious talking point between the two drivers.

Häkkinen lowered the benchmark in the afternoon to head a McLaren one-two, with Eddie Irvine third. Heinz-Harald Frentzen crashed near Turn 3 late in the session and subsequently withdrew after experiencing symptoms. Jordan‘s change of driver gave Ricardo Zonta the task of adapting quickly from Saturday morning onwards.

Häkkinen again led Saturday’s first practice, narrowly ahead of David Coulthard, as McLaren maintained its promising pace. Jarno Trulli spun at the hairpin and spent several minutes trying to select reverse before returning to the pits. The sunny conditions allowed the teams to continue working towards qualifying without a weather interruption.

Michael Schumacher went fastest in final practice, moving Ferrari ahead of the McLarens. Ricardo Zonta ran into the gravel after locking his brakes, while Jean Alesi spun and stalled. Häkkinen also became stranded at the hairpin at the end of the session, losing the chance to finish his preparations cleanly.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher took pole with the only lap below 1:16, putting his Ferrari more than half a second clear of Ralf Schumacher. David Coulthard qualified third ahead of Jarno Trulli. Rubens Barrichello crashed at the final chicane, then used the spare Ferrari to salvage fifth.

Häkkinen damaged his car over the final-corner kerbs and struggled with the spare to qualify eighth. Nick Heidfeld also crashed at the final chicane, causing a late stoppage. Ricardo Zonta secured twelfth on his return, while Fernando Alonso‘s times were deleted after his Minardi‘s front wing failed a dimensional check.

Sunday warm-up

Olivier Panis headed a tightly matched warm-up, with the top six separated by only fifteen hundredths of a second. Ricardo Zonta placed third as he continued settling into the Jordan. Michael Schumacher compared front-wing options, while Häkkinen again crossed the gravel at the first corner but avoided damaging his rebuilt McLaren.

What happened in the 2001 Canadian Grand Prix?

Michael Schumacher led away, with Ralf Schumacher staying close behind and repeatedly looking for an opening. Juan Pablo Montoya‘s accident and Rubens Barrichello‘s crash while avoiding him brought out the safety car. Once racing resumed, the brothers remained the central contest, with the Williams unable to complete a pass on track.

Ralf Schumacher‘s opportunity came when Michael made his fuel stop. The Williams stayed out for several more laps, setting a series of rapid times in clear air before stopping and emerging ahead. He then pulled away to claim his second career victory, with Michael securing second and Häkkinen completing the podium.

David Coulthard retired with engine failure, a major setback in his title challenge. Kimi Räikkönen finished fourth, Jean Alesi fifth and Pedro de la Rosa sixth after late retirements changed the points positions. The result extended Michael Schumacher‘s championship lead even though it was his younger brother who took the winner’s trophy.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 58 points, followed by David Coulthard on 40. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 82, with McLaren on 48.
