Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 5 leading the 2001 F1 World Championship on 26 points, with David Coulthard on 26. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 40 points.
Race entries
Pedro de la Rosa took over Luciano Burti‘s Jaguar seat, while Luciano Burti moved to Prost in place of Gastón Gaston Mazzacane. Spain also marked the return of legal traction control, launch control and fully automatic gearboxes, making electronic systems a major part of the weekend’s preparation.
Free Practice
David Coulthard led Friday’s opening practice as teams tuned their newly permitted electronic aids on a low-grip circuit. Jacques Villeneuve‘s BAR suffered a fiery engine failure during a practice start, while Eddie Irvine lost much of the session to hydraulic leaks. Juan Pablo Montoya spun and Heinz-Harald Frentzen hit the barriers, adding to a busy morning for the mechanics.
David Coulthard remained fastest across Friday, with Eddie Irvine recovering to second in the afternoon order. The abrasive surface punished tyres, and Juan Pablo Montoya‘s session ended with another engine failure. Häkkinen survived a late spin, while Tarso Marques also went into the gravel. De la Pedro de la Rosa began settling into Jaguar, posting a competitive time on his first weekend with the team.

Michael Schumacher moved ahead in Saturday’s first session as cooler conditions helped times fall. Häkkinen was second despite locking up and running through the first-corner gravel. David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello followed, giving Ferrari and McLaren the strongest platform before the final opportunity to prepare for qualifying.
Rubens Barrichello closed to within four hundredths of Michael Schumacher‘s earlier benchmark, keeping Ferrari at the head of the combined Saturday times. De la Pedro de la Rosa suffered a power-steering failure near the pit exit and hit the barrier, tearing off a front wheel. He escaped injury, but Jaguar faced repairs and a spare-car compromise for qualifying.

Qualifying
Michael Schumacher edged Häkkinen by just 0.085 seconds to take pole with a 1:18.201. David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello filled the second row, with Ralf Schumacher fifth. Häkkinen selectively switched off traction control to reduce understeer as he chased Ferrari‘s benchmark.
Jacques Villeneuve qualified seventh between the Jordans despite brake trouble and an unwanted ballast load on one run. Kimi Räikkönen and Nick Heidfeld completed the top ten. Juan Pablo Montoya was only twelfth after traffic spoiled his attempts, while Pedro de la Rosa qualified twentieth in the spare Jaguar following his morning crash.

Sunday warm-up
Rubens Barrichello led warm-up as drivers rehearsed starts with launch control. McLaren‘s preparations ended badly when a hydraulic failure shut down David Coulthard‘s car near the end of the session. Häkkinen was second fastest, with David Coulthard still third on his earlier lap, but the failure was an unwelcome warning before the race.

What happened in the 2001 Spanish Grand Prix?
David Coulthard‘s launch-control problem stranded him before the formation lap, forcing him to start at the back; contact then required an early front-wing change. At the front, Michael Schumacher led Häkkinen through the first stint, but the McLaren stayed close enough to make the pit-stop sequence decisive.
Schumacher developed a tyre vibration after his second stop and reduced his pace. Häkkinen stayed out longer, built the margin he needed and emerged ahead, apparently set for a fourth consecutive Spanish victory. Then, on the final lap, a hydraulic leak led to clutch failure and the McLaren slowed to a halt.
Schumacher took the unexpected win, with Juan Pablo Montoya second on his first Grand Prix finish. Jacques Villeneuve secured BAR‘s maiden podium, Jarno Trulli finished fourth and David Coulthard recovered to fifth ahead of Nick Heidfeld. Häkkinen was classified ninth, an especially cruel outcome after a commanding final stint.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 36 points, followed by David Coulthard on 28. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 50, with McLaren on 32.
