Championship background

Jenson Button arrived at round 10 leading the 2009 F1 World Championship on 68 points, with Sebastian Vettel on 47. Brawn GP headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 112 points.

Race entries

Jaime Alguersuari replaced Sébastien Sebastien Bourdais at Toro Rosso, becoming Formula 1’s youngest race starter at the time. Felipe Massa’s qualifying accident subsequently reduced the starting field to 19 cars, leaving Kimi Räikkönen as Ferrari’s only race representative.

Free Practice

Heikki Kovalainen received the full McLaren upgrade package and immediately felt the benefit, leading FP1 with improved grip and stability. Lewis Hamilton also ran near the front. Jaime Alguersuari began learning the Toro Rosso, while Renault and Ferrari found their setup work less straightforward on the dry Hungaroring surface.

Lewis Hamilton led a McLaren one-two in FP2, strengthening the impression that the team’s development work was paying off. Brawn GP followed its usual heavier-fuel Friday programme, leaving Jenson Button down the order despite a relatively small time deficit. Jaime Alguersuari and Sébastien Sebastien Buemi each completed 82 laps across the two sessions, giving the newcomer valuable experience.

Lewis Hamilton remained fastest in final practice, but several rivals had disrupted preparations. Timo Glock lost most of the session to a hydraulic leak before returning late enough to set a competitive lap. Adrian Sutil hit the barrier after misjudging Turn 8, while Nick Heidfeld’s second place offered BMW Sauber encouragement after an unhappy Friday.

Qualifying

Fernando Alonso claimed pole after a timing-system failure left the drivers comparing their own lap times in the pit lane. His Renault carried considerably less fuel than the cars around him, with Sebastian Vettel second, Mark Webber third and Lewis Hamilton fourth.

The session was overshadowed by Felipe Massa’s serious accident in Q2. A spring that had detached from Rubens Barrichello’s car struck his helmet, leaving him unconscious as the Ferrari hit the barrier. Felipe Massa was taken to hospital and underwent surgery. Although his time had been sufficient to reach Q3, he withdrew from the remainder of the weekend.

Felipe Massa was injured in the second phase of qualifying and therefore did not set a time for Q3.

Owing to Massa’s inability to start the race, all cars behind him moved up one place to close the gap.

What happened in the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Fernando Alonso led initially, but Lewis Hamilton passed Mark Webber using KERS and began closing on the Renault. Fernando Alonso’s early stop then went badly wrong when his right-front wheel was not properly secured. The wheel detached on his out-lap; he returned to the pits but soon retired with a separate fuel-system problem.

Lewis Hamilton took control while Kimi Räikkönen moved ahead of Mark Webber during the first stops. Sebastian Vettel struggled after opening-lap contact and eventually retired, while Jenson Button could not extract enough speed from the Brawn GP car to challenge the leaders. A long opening stint helped Timo Glock recover into the points.

Lewis Hamilton won comfortably from Kimi Räikkönen and Mark Webber, completing McLaren’s striking mid-season revival. Nico Rosberg finished fourth for the third consecutive race, ahead of Heikki Kovalainen and Timo Glock. Jenson Button’s seventh place allowed Mark Webber to reduce his championship deficit to 18.5 points, while Jaime Alguersuari completed his debut ahead of Sebastien Buemi.

After the race, Jenson Button headed the drivers’ standings with 70 points, followed by Mark Webber on 51.5. Brawn GP led the constructors’ table on 114, with Red Bull Racing on 98.5.
