korean grand prix

The Korean Grand Prix was held at the purpose-built Korea International Circuit in Yeongam from 2010 to 2013. Introduced during Formula 1’s global expansion era, the race formed part of an ambitious long-term agreement, though financial challenges ultimately curtailed its lifespan.

What To Know?

  • Vettel won three of four races – Sebastian Vettel dominated the Korean Grand Prix from 2011 to 2013, making Yeongam one of his most successful venues.
  • The 2010 race was rain-hit and decisive – Fernando Alonso’s victory came after both Red Bulls retired, dramatically reshaping the championship picture.
  • Every winner was a future or reigning World Champion – All four Korean Grand Prix victories were taken by drivers who were World Champions during their careers.
  • A short-lived expansion-era event – Despite a long-term contract, the race lasted only four seasons before being dropped from the Formula 1 calendar after 2013.

Korean Grand Prix Winners: 2010 to 2013

The inaugural Korean Grand Prix in 2010 took place in difficult conditions after weeks of uncertainty about whether the circuit would be completed in time. Heavy rain caused chaos during the race, leading to safety-car periods and several incidents. Fernando Alonso capitalised for Ferrari, taking victory after both Red Bulls retired from the lead. The win proved crucial in Alonso’s late-season title charge.

From 2011 onward, the race became synonymous with Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing. Vettel won in 2011 after inheriting the lead early and controlling the race from the front. He returned in 2012 to deliver another measured victory, strengthening his momentum in what became a fiercely contested championship campaign.

By 2013, Vettel’s dominance was complete. Starting from pole position, he secured his third consecutive Korean Grand Prix win as part of a remarkable late-season streak that carried him to his fourth World Championship.

Although originally planned as a long-term fixture, the Korean Grand Prix disappeared from the calendar after 2013. Financial difficulties, logistical challenges and limited local engagement contributed to its removal, and planned revivals for 2014 and beyond never materialised.
