The Luxembourg Grand Prix was a brief but memorable addition to the Formula 1 World Championship, held in 1997 and 1998 at the Nürburgring. Despite its name, the race took place in Germany, approximately 80 kilometres from the Luxembourg border.
The event adopted the Luxembourg title because the Hockenheimring was already hosting the German Grand Prix, and Formula 1 regulations at the time prevented two races in the same country from sharing the same name.
What To Know?
- Two races, two champions – Both Jacques Villeneuve in 1997 and Mika Häkkinen in 1998 went on to win the Drivers’ Championship in the same season.

- Held in Germany, named for Luxembourg – The race took place at the Nürburgring despite carrying the Luxembourg title.

Luxembourg Grand Prix Winner: 1997 to 1998
The inaugural Luxembourg Grand Prix in 1997 delivered a dramatic twist in the championship fight. Victory went to Jacques Villeneuve, driving for Williams. The race appeared set to hand Mika Häkkinen his first Formula 1 victory, but both McLarens retired within a single lap due to engine failures. Villeneuve capitalised to secure the win, which would ultimately prove decisive in his successful championship campaign. It also marked the final Formula 1 victory of his career.
The 1998 edition saw Häkkinen’s redemption. Starting third on the grid for McLaren, he controlled the race to take victory ahead of Michael Schumacher. The win strengthened Häkkinen’s title charge, and like Villeneuve the year before, he went on to clinch the World Championship at the season finale in Suzuka.
After 1998, the Nürburgring event reverted to the European Grand Prix title. The Luxembourg Grand Prix name disappeared from the calendar, but its two editions remain closely linked to championship glory.
