Ayrton Senna began his remarkable run of Monaco victories in 1987, taking Lotus’s active-suspension car to its first win. Nigel Mansell had dominated qualifying and led the early stages, but turbo trouble opened the door for Ayrton Senna, with Nelson Piquet and Michele Alboreto completing the podium.

Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 4 leading the 1987 F1 World Championship on 18 points, with Stefan Johansson on 13. McLaren – TAG headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 31 points.

Race entries

The permitted Monaco grid increased from 20 cars to 26, raising concerns about traffic and speed differences on the narrow circuit. Christian Danner was excluded after his Thursday collision with Michele Alboreto, while Adrián Adrian Campos withdrew following a Saturday practice accident. Those departures left 24 starters.

Thursday Free Practice

Thursday morning gave the teams their first running on the street circuit, where there was no opportunity for normal pre-race testing. Nigel Mansell quickly looked at home in the Williams, while everyone had to judge the bumps, barriers and traffic. Lotus’s active suspension offered a promising way to keep the car settled on a circuit that rarely allowed the drivers a moment’s rest.

Thursday Qualifying

Nigel Mansell set the fastest time on Thursday, but the session’s most alarming moment was Michele Alboreto’s collision with Christian Danner on the climb towards Casino Square. The Ferrari became airborne and caught fire; Michele Alboreto escaped and continued in the spare. Christian Danner’s exclusion was controversial, with Michele Alboreto among those who did not blame him.

Saturday Free Practice

Adrian Campos crashed at Casino Square during Saturday morning practice. Although he walked back to the pits, he was subsequently kept in hospital for observation and withdrawn from the meeting. His absence followed Christian Danner’s exclusion and further reduced the enlarged entry before the final qualifying session.

Saturday Qualifying

Nigel Mansell remained quickest on Saturday and secured pole by a substantial margin over Ayrton Senna. Nelson Piquet qualified third ahead of Alain Prost, while Michele Alboreto recovered to fifth. The front of the grid promised a contest between Williams’s outright speed and Lotus’s ability to handle the street circuit.

Sunday warm-up

Ayrton Senna topped the warm-up by more than eight-tenths of a second from Nigel Mansell, offering Lotus real encouragement before the race. Williams had owned qualifying, but the yellow car’s race-day pace suggested the pole-sitter might face a proper challenge. Keeping the car composed over the bumps would matter throughout a long afternoon in traffic.

What happened in the 1987 Monaco Grand Prix?

Nigel Mansell led Ayrton Senna away and established control at the front, with Nelson Piquet, Michele Alboreto and Alain Prost behind. His race ended on lap 30 when turbo boost disappeared, handing Ayrton Senna the lead. The Lotus driver then had the pace to make a tyre stop and remain in command.

Ayrton Senna drove cleanly through the remaining laps while Nelson Piquet held second. Alain Prost was on course for third until his engine failed close to the finish, promoting Michele Alboreto to the podium and leaving the championship leader with no points from the race.

Ayrton Senna won by more than half a minute, his first success at Monaco and the first Grand Prix victory for active suspension. Gerhard Berger finished fourth behind his Ferrari team-mate, with Jonathan Palmer fifth and Ivan Capelli sixth. Both naturally aspirated cars collected valuable championship points as well as success within their own category.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 18 points, followed by Ayrton Senna on 15. McLaren – TAG led the constructors’ table on 31, with Williams – Honda on 22.
