Championship background

Elio de Angelis arrived at round 4 leading the 1985 F1 World Championship on 16 points, with Michele Alboreto on 12. Lotus – Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 25 points.

Race entries

Toleman finally began its season with Teo Fabi after acquiring Spirit’s Pirelli tyre contract. Spirit was absent, and Monaco’s 20-car starting limit left several drivers facing elimination. Teo Fabi would claim the final place on the grid on the team’s first weekend of the year.

Thursday Free Practice

Thursday was dry, allowing the teams to concentrate on brakes, tyres and rhythm through the street circuit. Nigel Mansell hit a barrier and lost running while Williams repaired his car, and Manfred Winkelhock damaged both ends of his RAM. A clean session mattered especially here, where confidence and track position were difficult to recover once lost.

Thursday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna led Thursday qualifying, ahead of Riccardo Patrese and Alain Prost. The Alfa Romeos were unusually competitive, while the battle to reach the 20-car grid was intense at the other end of the field.

Saturday Free Practice

De Andrea de Cesaris crashed the spare Ligier at Massenet on Saturday morning, but his newer race car remained available. Across the field, traffic and the close barriers made preparation difficult, while drivers had to judge the response of powerful turbo engines at low speed. The final qualifying hour would leave very little room for an imperfect lap.

Saturday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna took pole with 1:20.450 on Saturday, just 0.086 seconds ahead of Nigel Mansell. Michele Alboreto was third and Eddie Cheever fourth, with Alain Prost fifth. Teo Fabi secured twentieth, while Pierluigi Martini’s accident and the limited grid left Minardi among those missing the race.

Sunday warm-up

Alain Prost topped the warm-up, but Renault-engine choices prompted substantial work before the start. De Elio de Angelis, Patrick Tambay and de Andrea de Cesaris opted for the older specification, while Ayrton Senna kept the newer unit after an over-rev during the session. A subsequent misfire forced de Elio de Angelis into the spare Lotus, adding another late complication.

What happened in the 1985 Monaco Grand Prix?

Ayrton Senna led away and pulled clear once his tyres were working, but his engine failed early in the race. Michele Alboreto inherited the lead, only to slide wide on oil from the collision between Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese. Niki Lauda also went off on the oil and retired, while Alain Prost moved to the front.

Michele Alboreto caught and passed Alain Prost, then suffered a puncture that forced him to stop. He returned to the track and worked past de Andrea de Cesaris and de Elio de Angelis, but the delay left Alain Prost with enough of an advantage to control the closing laps despite a turbo-control problem.

Alain Prost won by 7.541 seconds from Michele Alboreto, with de Elio de Angelis third. De Andrea de Cesaris, Derek Warwick and Jacques Laffite completed the points. De Elio de Angelis retained the championship lead, two points ahead of both Alain Prost and Michele Alboreto.

After the race, Elio de Angelis headed the drivers’ standings with 20 points, followed by Alain Prost on 18. Lotus – Renault led the constructors’ table on 29, with Ferrari on 22.
