Championship background

Michele Alboreto arrived at round 7 leading the 1985 F1 World Championship on 31 points, with Elio de Angelis on 24. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 47 points.

Race entries

Zakspeed returned for the European races, and Tyrrell introduced its Renault-powered 014 for Martin Brundle. Stefan Bellof continued in the Cosworth car, leaving the team running two very different machines. Renault also brought a revised RE60 for Patrick Tambay as the championship returned to the full Paul Ricard circuit.

Friday Free Practice

Friday morning quickly showed Ferrari that its suspension changes were not working as hoped. Settings that had looked promising at Fiorano did not suit Paul Ricard, forcing the team to reconsider its approach. The long Mistral straight also highlighted the difference between Martin Brundle’s new turbo Tyrrell and Stefan Bellof’s older naturally aspirated car.

Friday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna led Friday qualifying with 1:32.835, ahead of Keke Rosberg and Alain Prost. Ferrari’s engine failures added to its handling difficulties, while Nelson Piquet remained close enough to be a serious race contender.

Saturday Free Practice

Nigel Mansell suffered a major accident on Saturday morning when a rear tyre failed near Signes. The Williams hit the catch fencing, and concussion ruled him out of the race. Ferrari reverted towards its previous suspension configuration, improving Michele Alboreto’s pace, but Stefan Johansson continued to lose running to engine problems.

Saturday Qualifying

Keke Rosberg improved to 1:32.462 on Saturday and took pole. Ayrton Senna’s engine failed during his attempt to respond, leaving him second on his Friday time. Michele Alboreto qualified third, followed by Alain Prost and Nelson Piquet; Nigel Mansell withdrew after his morning accident.

Sunday warm-up

The early warm-up took place before the full heat of the day, limiting its value for tyre comparisons. Alain Prost and Niki Lauda headed the times, but Nelson Piquet had a more immediate concern when his gearbox felt wrong. He switched to the spare Brabham, a change that kept his race prospects intact.

What happened in the 1985 French Grand Prix?

Keke Rosberg led at the start, but Nelson Piquet passed Ayrton Senna and then caught the Williams. The Brabham’s tyres allowed him to sustain his pace, and he moved ahead as Keke Rosberg struggled for grip. Michele Alboreto retired early with turbo trouble, losing an opportunity to extend his championship lead.

Ayrton Senna’s engine failure sent him into a heavy accident at Signes, from which he escaped with bruising. Niki Lauda also retired, promoting Alain Prost. Keke Rosberg made a late tyre stop and charged back past de Elio de Angelis before catching Alain Prost on the final lap.

Nelson Piquet won by 6.660 seconds from Keke Rosberg, with Alain Prost third. Stefan Johansson passed de Elio de Angelis late on for fourth, and Patrick Tambay took sixth. Pirelli celebrated its first World Championship victory since 1957, while Brabham enjoyed what would be the team’s last win.

After the race, Michele Alboreto headed the drivers’ standings with 31 points, followed by Alain Prost on 26. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 50, with Lotus – Renault on 35.
