Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 2 leading the 1985 F1 World Championship on 9 points, with Michele Alboreto on 6. McLaren – TAG headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 9 points.

Race entries

Stefan Johansson joined Ferrari following Rene Arnoux’s departure, while Stefan Bellof returned to Tyrrell. Zakspeed made its debut with Jonathan Palmer, bringing its own chassis and turbo engine. Toleman remained absent as it continued searching for a tyre supply.

Friday Free Practice

Changeable weather complicated Friday’s preparations. Lotus was still tracing the misfire that had troubled Ayrton Senna in Brazil, and a clutch problem in the spare also cost him running. Stefan Johansson had a new Ferrari to learn, while Zakspeed’s first Grand Prix weekend was as much about establishing reliable operation as chasing lap times.

Friday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna headed Friday qualifying from de Elio de Angelis, putting Lotus in a strong position despite its mechanical interruptions. Niki Lauda was third, but the changing conditions left the grid far from settled.

Saturday Free Practice

Williams had a difficult build-up, with abrupt Honda power delivery adding to its drivers’ workload. Nigel Mansell’s weekend also included a collision involving the Alfa Romeos, leaving repairs to complete. Ferrari was searching for better traction, and several Pirelli runners found race tyres more useful than the qualifying compounds in the conditions.

Saturday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna improved to 1:21.007 on Saturday and secured his first pole. Alain Prost joined him on the front row, ahead of Keke Rosberg and de Elio de Angelis. Michele Alboreto was fifth, while Stefan Johansson qualified eleventh for his Ferrari debut.

Sunday warm-up

The warm-up took place on a dry track, with Alain Prost fastest. That preparation was soon overtaken by events as heavy rain arrived before the start. Nigel Mansell and Pierluigi Martini damaged their cars on the way to the grid and had to begin from the pits, while the entire field faced a race very different from the morning session.

What happened in the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix?

Ayrton Senna led de Elio de Angelis away and rapidly built an advantage in the rain. Alain Prost pressed the second Lotus but could not find a way through, while spins and collisions disrupted much of the field. The Pirelli runners struggled particularly badly for grip.

As the rain intensified, Alain Prost spun into retirement and Ayrton Senna signalled his concern about the conditions. The race continued, with Michele Alboreto passing de Elio de Angelis for second. Patrick Tambay also moved ahead of the Lotus as de Elio de Angelis managed a tyre problem near the finish.

The two-hour limit ended the race after 67 laps. Ayrton Senna had lapped everyone except Michele Alboreto, producing an extraordinary first victory. Patrick Tambay finished third, followed by de Elio de Angelis, Nigel Mansell and Stefan Bellof, whose naturally aspirated Tyrrell collected the final point.

After the race, Michele Alboreto headed the drivers’ standings with 12 points, followed by Alain Prost on 9. Lotus – Renault led the constructors’ table on 16, with Ferrari on 15.
