Championship background

Niki Lauda arrived at round 16 leading the 1984 F1 World Championship on 66 points, with Alain Prost on 62.5. McLaren – TAG headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 128.5 points.

Race entries

Philippe Streiff made his debut in a third Renault. Manfred Winkelhock replaced Teo Fabi at Brabham after the death of Fabi’s father, while Gerhard Berger took ATS’s regular number 14 entry. Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell were making their final appearances for Toleman and Lotus before moving teams.

Thursday familiarisation

An additional Thursday afternoon session introduced the teams to Estoril before the official weekend began. The circuit had been refurbished for Portugal’s first World Championship Grand Prix since 1960. Grey skies and a cool wind accompanied the initial running, but the track remained dry.

Friday Free Practice

Heavy rain flooded parts of the circuit on Friday and delayed the start of practice until midday. The session was shortened to an hour, with conditions changing continually as the water cleared. Brabham was also trying to arrange Manfred Winkelhock’s arrival, leaving Nelson Piquet as its only driver on track that day.

Friday Qualifying

Friday qualifying was delayed by the weather and interrupted by Gerhard Berger’s accident. Further crashes and mechanical failures followed as the track dried. Alain Prost ultimately headed the session, with de Elio de Angelis second and Niki Lauda third.

Saturday Free Practice

Saturday was dry and much more productive. Manfred Winkelhock began learning the Brabham, while contact between Philippe Streiff and de Elio de Angelis damaged the Lotus. Niki Lauda lost time to electrical trouble, including a faulty ignition switch. Ayrton Senna ended the morning fastest, confirming that Toleman could challenge near the front on the unfamiliar circuit.

Saturday Qualifying

Nelson Piquet edged Alain Prost for pole on Saturday, setting 1:21.703. Ayrton Senna took third and Keke Rosberg fourth after a late switch to the spare Williams. Niki Lauda could manage only eleventh, leaving several quick cars between him and the second place he needed if Alain Prost won.

Sunday warm-up

The Sunday warm-up brought several final reliability concerns. Ayrton Senna needed an engine change, Philippe Streiff stopped on track, and Niki Lauda’s McLaren showed signs of a water leak. The championship leader already faced a difficult race from eleventh, so completing the preparations without another major setback was essential.

What happened in the 1984 Portuguese Grand Prix?

Keke Rosberg led the opening laps before Alain Prost took control. Niki Lauda began working through the field, while Nigel Mansell established himself in second. As Alain Prost pulled clear, the championship increasingly depended on whether Niki Lauda could reach the Lotus.

Nigel Mansell’s brake failure ended his race and promoted Niki Lauda into the crucial second place. The Austrian then concentrated on bringing the McLaren home, with Ayrton Senna behind him. Alain Prost did everything required at the front, but could no longer decide the title by his own result alone.

Alain Prost won his seventh race of the year, while Niki Lauda’s second place secured a third World Championship by half a point. Ayrton Senna finished third, followed by Michele Alboreto, de Elio de Angelis and Nelson Piquet. McLaren ended its dominant season with another one-two and both drivers at the centre of an extraordinary title finish.

After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 72 points, followed by Alain Prost on 71.5. McLaren – TAG led the constructors’ table on 143.5, with Ferrari on 57.5.
