Keke Rosberg won the only World Championship Dallas Grand Prix in 1984, overcoming fierce heat and a crumbling track. René Rene Arnoux recovered to second and Elio de Angelis finished third, while pole-sitter Nigel Mansell’s exhausted attempt to push his stricken Lotus became the race’s enduring image.

Championship background
Alain Prost arrived at round 9 leading the 1984 F1 World Championship on 35.5 points, with Niki Lauda on 24. McLaren – TAG headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 59.5 points.
Race entries
Corrado Fabi returned to Brabham in place of Teo, and both Arrows drivers now had BMW-powered cars. Brundle’s Friday accident left Tyrrell with Bellof alone, while Philippe Alliot’s damaged RAM could not be repaired for the race. The new venue gave every driver a circuit to learn.
Friday Free Practice
Friday morning immediately exposed the rough surface and oppressive heat. Niki Lauda was fastest, but even he crashed during the opening day as the asphalt deteriorated. The teams concentrated on making their cars manageable over the bumps and keeping both machinery and drivers cool, rather than pursuing a conventional set-up programme.
Friday Qualifying
Nigel Mansell claimed provisional pole on Friday with 1:37.041, ahead of de Elio de Angelis. Brundle suffered a heavy crash that injured both feet and ended his season, while Philippe Alliot’s accident also removed his car from the meeting.

Saturday Free Practice
For Saturday, Brabham revised its oil-cooler arrangement after the larger nose-mounted unit upset the car’s handling. The worsening surface made improvement difficult, and the teams were increasingly short of undamaged equipment. Toleman’s Friday damage left it particularly cautious about risking its remaining cars before the race.
Saturday Qualifying
Most leading drivers could not improve on Saturday as the surface deteriorated. Derek Warwick was an exception, moving into third behind the two Lotuses. Nigel Mansell therefore secured his first pole, with Rene Arnoux fourth, Niki Lauda fifth and Ayrton Senna sixth.

Sunday warm-up
The planned Sunday warm-up was cancelled. Overnight repairs continued after the support races had further damaged the track, leaving no safe opportunity for the usual half-hour session. The Grand Prix retained its early 11:00 start in an effort to avoid the worst of the heat, despite continuing concerns about the surface.
What happened in the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix?
Nigel Mansell led the opening stages, resisting a succession of challengers as the track broke up. Derek Warwick crashed while trying to pass, and Keke Rosberg eventually found a way through. Alain Prost later took the lead but struck a wall, handing the advantage back to Williams.
The heat and barriers steadily reduced the field. Rene Arnoux recovered from a starting problem to move into second, while Niki Lauda also retired after contact with a wall. Keke Rosberg kept his concentration and managed the conditions as the race reached its two-hour limit.
Keke Rosberg won from Rene Arnoux and de Elio de Angelis, with Jacques Laffite fourth and Piercarlo Ghinzani fifth. Nigel Mansell’s Lotus stopped near the finish; he tried to push it across the line before collapsing from exhaustion and was classified sixth. It was Honda’s first victory of the turbo era and Williams’s only win of the season.
After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 35.5 points, followed by Elio de Angelis on 26. McLaren – TAG led the constructors’ table on 59.5, with Ferrari on 32.5.
